...into the scary world of literary theory at university level, I felt way out of my depth. I struggled getting to grips with various theorists until I was finally recommended this book by a tutor. I actually found it in the university library rather than buying it (I'm a student after all!) but if I were to pursue this study I would definitely buy it. Terry Eagleton presents a very clear outline of literary theory in an accessible and eloquent style ... ...a way in to understanding literary theory and was able to go on to look at other authors in a new light, appreciating their in depth knowledge all the more for this simplistic presentation of theory. Most importantly, the level of detail gave me the confidence to look at these other books instead of feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of critical studies. With this book as a starting point, I think anyone can find a way in to the study of literary ...

Advantages: Makes complicated ideas more simple Disadvantages: Still pretty complex
Critical theory never pretended to be very straightforward, but at least with a book like this you have some hope of understanding at least most of what these theorists are on about in the various approaches.
Eagleton goes through the various approaches to literature and give brief summaries of the main theorists that are involved. He explains briefly, but includes all the information necessary for understanding.
