Background

Little Big Planet is an incredible innovative game available on the Playstation 3. The game is produced by Media Molecule a fairly new game development studio based in Guildford. Little Big Planet was there first creation and they won the studio of the Year award in 2008 so have got off to a flying start. Little Big Planet was released in the UK on the 5th November 2008 and is a puzzle platformer staring Sackboy.

Sack Boy

Sack boy is a completely customizable doll made from material. The player is able to customise everything from the colour and texture of the material that your Sackboy is made from to the clothing and accessories that wears. Media molecule are constantly releasing brand new costumes for you Sackboy that can easily be downloaded from the Playstation Store and collected as you go through the story. I liked my Sackboy to be a bit different and unique so I made him green to look a bit like a frog and gave him a very nice rubber ring and snorkel to run around in and to finish off the whole look I gave him a bit of bling around his neck. This is the whole idea of the game to be completely customizable and allow everybody to be unique.

Gameplay

Little Big Planet is designed to have realistic physics for example when you jump on a foam block it compresses and bounces back like foam would, all of the materials in the game act like this.
The game is a platformer so you travel from left to right working you way along solving puzzles and destroying enemies that get in your way, there are many different ways of doing this and it is left to your imagination. The game allows up to four player to play on the same console which makes it all the more fun, you can run around together helping each other out or generally just grab hold of them and give them a good slap.

Graphics

The graphics are also really impressive in this game all of the material you have to customise your Sackboy with look very realistic and all of the items in the game and the scenery also looks very real but may have a cartoon styled appearance such things as the clouds are made from foam and before you start designing the level looks like a blank canvas.

Creativity

The whole game is built around creativity and allowing everybody to have a go at designing there own Sackboy and there own levels. There are great tutorials which teach you everything you need to know. When designing your own levels the world is you oyster pretty much nearly anything that you can think of can be made. When building a level you can choose from a vast array of materials and objects that will allow you to do anything such as build vehicles and different contraptions to challenge other players. In the game you are also able to upload your own photos to use as backgrounds to make it that little bit extra special and unique.

Community

The game is built around having a community, as people design there own levels they can then putt hem onto the Little Big Planet world and everybody can play them. People can then rate your level and leave comments. This makes the game ever expanding as there are always new levels to play and some of the original things that people come up with are quite amazing.

Audio

The game has a very catchy and uplifting sound track that will always put you in a good mood and different levels have there own style of music that matches perfectly with the general feeling of the level. Stephen Fry narrates the game and takes you through the tutorials in the game, in my opinion he was the perfect choice, there is just something about his voice that goes perfectly with the game.

Conclusion

Little Big Planet is one of the first truly unique games to be brought onto a console in a long time. It is suitable for everyone not matter what your age, who couldn't love that cute little Sackboy. It can be as easy or as challenging as you like, and if you have a creative side you can let your imagination run wild, a perfect game for any occasion.

I've wondered what this game is all about. The tv adverts didn't really explain it that well. Good review.
