Little Bill is a cute little character from Nick Junior on Sky. He is a creation of Bill Crosby and started out life as a book illustration before finally making the big screen! He always wears a baseball cap and blue jeans with a sweatshirt.
Little Bill lives in Chicago although it could be any suburb anywhere around the world! He lives with his mum Brenda, dad Bill, older brother ( ooh! I forgot!) and sister April and his grandma Alice-the -great. They are a coloured family, which is quite novel for childrens tv, but if you consider Bill Crosby created them, then hey, did I really need to point it out! They live in a terraced house in a ‘nice’ area of town. All the community seem to look out for each other and always are willing to do a good turn! Little Bill goes to nursery school and has a few friends called Fuschia, Andrew and Kiko. Their teacher is called Miss Murray and like all kindergarten children, they love Miss Murray! Fuschia and Little Bill even play a part in her Wedding Ceremony!.Little Bill also has a friend called Monty who goes to a different school because he is in a wheelchair.
Little Bill is a typical, I think, three year old child with curiosities about the world around him. Any little event is an adventure, for example, going to the supermarket and choosing which cereal to buy! He is influenced very strongly by his father’s actions. The fact that he is called Bill, the same as himself, he already feels important and grown up.
The show deals with all kinds of social occasions, for example, a new baby and sibling jealousy, Mum going away for a night without him, a friend moving away, new neighbours, dentists, hairdressers and so on.
As any young child, Little Bill has his hero, Captain Brainstorm. The children in the program have the action figures and watch the TV show together. Little Bill also has a friend who is a Hamster. He feeds him and talks to him every episode.
The stories are very true to life, with friends falling out, children being rude, fibbing, calling names. And so on. A particular episode which sticks with me is where Little Bill and his best friend Andrew fall out and because they both like the same toys, fire engines, they call each other copy cats! This is frowned upon and they soon make up! Ahh!! The memories!!
The episodes usually start at the breakfast table and move through the day as if in real time! The episodes always end at bedtime!
The show is on Nick Junior through out the day, being repeated over and over! There are only about twenty different episodes too so expect to see repeats!
The show is said to truly reflect the wisdom, outlook, and humour of creator Bill Cosby. I have not met him personally so I wouldn’t know but, I guess that kinda sums him up!! The series of books, later to be developed for the television was researched alongside educational specialists to ensure that they were good and wholesome (as my grandmother would say!) The show is designed to help kids face their everyday experiences and the people who share them.
Little Bill always greets the viewer by saying "Hello Friend!" This saying was inspired by the ‘Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation’, established in memory of the goals and dreams of Ennis, Bill Crosbys son. Im afraid I know no more info about the foundation than that! With humour and believable characters, it is a lovely programme for any child!!
The programme always finishes with a little rundown of Little Bills day. The screen closes when a family member says, ‘Little Bill, Who are you talking to?’. Little Bill giggles and goes to sleep. A beautiful programme!!
Thank you for reading!
Kerry xx
