While at the branch I was reading some literature about a new account that Lloyds TSB had launched. Although I wanted to close the account I did want to open a savings account which would give a good rate of interest compared to other similar accounts on the market.
The literature was really helpful and I found that if I upgraded the account I was thinking of closing to a Select current account then I could also open a Select savings account. The Select savings account was exactly what I wanted because it gave the best interest rates offered by Lloyds TSB and instant access to my money when I needed it.

AA Breakdown cover
£50 interest free overdraft
Card protection worth up to £12
Home Shopping Service which gives really good prices on goods
Lower rates on Select personal loans
An Asset credit card with discounted transfer rate which means that you can transfer outstanding balances from other credit cards and save money
Extended Warranties on goods purchased
and as a Select current account holder you are eligible for a Select Savings account if you wish to open one.
Apart from the above offers you also get a cashpoint card on the Select Savings account if you wish to access your money from the ATM which I thought was really handy. One thing that I better make clear is that for the above services Lloyds TSB provide with the Select Account there is a charge of £4 for the month which is taken from your account. However if you consider that the AA cover you get with the account is worth about £43 a year then that balances with the £48 a year the Select account would cost you to run.
So as you have probably guessed I upgraded my account to a Select Current Account and Opened a Select Savings account which I am really happy with so far!
Advantages: The benefits on offer. Disadvantages: £4 charge, only £50 of the overdraft is interest free.

The only account I feel is worth staying with them is the Select account, but it doesn’t come free, as there is a monthly charge of £4.
I have stayed with them because of the benefits package they offer with ... ...credit card providers, although with Lloyds TSB it’s for items bought both on credit & debit card.
4- Direct Debit benefit which although I haven’t used but does seem useful. This benefit is payable if you’re unable to work after accident or illness they pay your direct debitS up to £100 for 3 months.
5- Cheaper loans.

Although Lloyds TSB has many different branches, you can only do some things over the phone, e.g. overdraft extension requests. Although I don't like to be unfair to call-centre staff (especially considering their mind-numbing job), they don't always seem on the ball. I have been a Lloyds-TSB customer for many years but I have only opened a Gold Service current account recently, and how I wish I had bothered reading the leaflets my bank used to send me on a regular basis and which I ignored with the same regularity. I had a browse through all the different student accounts offered by the major banks and decided to go for Lloyds TSB. There were several reasons why I picked Lloyds. In my experience this doesn't matter as you can do all your banking at any branch of Lloyds or online. The only downside is the cost of phoning the 0845 number (open 9am to 7pm mon to fri).

LloydsTSB are becoming increasingly irritating with their in-branch pushy sales tactics. What used to be a five minute visit to the bank has now become 40 minutes as they try and sell you a mortgage, credit card, loan, insurance or an up grade to your account. If I do need to go into a LloydsTSB branch, I mentally prepare myself before entering so that I am ready to speak assertively when the cashier asks ''There is something flashing up on your account. Do you have a few moments to speak to someone about this? It could be important.'' Don't be fooled. Advantages: Best online banking service IMHO Disadvantages: Low interest rates and account charges
I've had this account for about 2 years now and I'm still using it as my main account. Quite surprising as as the interest rate is low and some of the services are expensive.
At the moment a lot of other banks are offering cash incentives to transfer your main account and the financial watchdogs are trying to make the process as easy as possible. So why have I stuck with this account for so long?
The £8 a month fee is about £8 more than I'd like to pay when I'm in credit but it does pay for a few interesting perks. As well as the usual Sentinel card protection you get worldwide travel insurance, a freepost gold-coloured keyfob so hopefully if you ever lose your keys they will be returned to you and I recently got a letter saying the account would also include break-down cover this year.
If you don't want to pay £96 per year ...
