When my car insurance was due I used the internet to find what I thought was the best deal. LloydsTSB came up with the best quote so I duly applied online giving my bank details. Two days after the proposed start date I had still had no confirmation and the amount had not gone from my bank account and it was in fact a week later before the money was taken out and I received my certificate. Although not too happy about this I thought it wouldn't matter as I could go elsewhere next year. However I decided to change my car and rang for a cover note to be sent and althought the car has a smaller engine it is newer so i didn't query the £16 extra. I rang on a monday morning and asked for the insurance to be changed from the wednesday and was told this was fine. On the thursday I rang to ask what was happening and was told it can take up to 5 working days, if so why did they not tell me this as it meant my current car was now uninsured and I was keeping the vendor waiting. Apparently I should have been told it would take 5 days when i gave the date of change as I needed to tax the car. When the certificate finally arrived I realised the £16 was mainly a £15 fee for change of car. Obviously that was my own fault for not reading the small print but previously I have been able to change my car free and get a cover note by return post with other insurers. Looks like I will be going back to direct line next time!

Advantages: Good value quote comparible with the cheapest elsewhere Disadvantages: Very detailed questions, some of which were irrelevant, and they didn't use the car reg number to get the detail as other direct style brokers do
