A far cry from the first year using the pill as a contraceptive method! Without wishing to scare any prospective pill-takers, my first pill (Microgynon) gave me every side effect in the book! I experienced weight gain, headaches, nausea (every day at 6pm) and I cried and cried and cried every day ... ...
Hence, Loestrin 20, a fantastic invention and the answer to all my contraceptive problems! The thing that confuses me about Loestrin 20 is that it contains a low dosage of hormones. I mean, if it is possible to be safe from pregnancy by taking less hormones, why doesn't everyone else do it? Hmm. Anyhow, being as I am evidently allergic to hormones (!) I've been on the pill now for about four years, and for three of these I've been taking Loestrin 20 which I've found to be a highly effective method of contraception with no side effects whatseoever.
A far cry from the first year using the pill as a contraceptive method! Without wishing to scare any prospective pill-takers, my first pill (Microgynon) gave me every side effect in the book! I experienced weight gain, headaches, nausea (every day at 6pm) and I cried and cried and cried every day for several months until someone mentionned to me that perhaps it was my pill that was at fault and not me. In response to these problems I went on a different kind of pill which mimics your natural cycle because you take different coloured pills at different times of the month which contain different amounts of hormones. And of course, I continued to cry. A lot. (An effective contraceptive in itself, but not ideal as I'm sure you'll agree!) Cue a short period of coming off the pill and an even worse experience with emergency conraception, culminating in me trying yet another pill. Don't get me wrong, the pill is a fantastic way to prevent pregnancy and has done a hell of a lot for womens liberation (ooh, thats the sociologist in me coming out!), but its very important that you get the right pill for you or the whole thing is just pointless!
Hmm. Anyhow, being as I am evidently allergic to hormones (!) I have found Loestrin to work very well for me. No weight gain, no nausea, no regular irrational hysterics. And I havn't got pregnant. Yet.
Loestrin 20 is the same as most other combined pills. It comes in a discreet little packet and you take one every day for three weeks and then have a break to have a period. Try to take it at the same time every day (although you have 12 hours leeway) and be aware that sickness, diorrhea and other medication can reduce the pill's effectiveness.
Apparently when my mother went on the pill the doctor advised her to take it at night 'when her mind was on it' (Ew, mother, I don't want to know!) and I found that taking it at night also prevented the aforementionned nausea because I was asleep and missed it.
Now this isn't an advert for Loastrin 20 - I'm sure doctors hate it when you turn up and tell them which pill you want against their better judgement - but I want you all to be aware that the pill, despite being one of the most effective contraceptive methods - doesn't suit everyone, and there is no need to suffer side effects unecessarily. If you experience problems with your pill ask your doctor to recommend a different one.
Advantages: Quite easy to use Disadvantages: Not good if you're forgetful
...me when I was on Loestrin 20 - this was due to the dosage APPARENTLY and when the doctor moved me to the 30 I have been great. Other side effects include headaches - these range from mildly bearable to a full on Migraine. Now again, I have found with this pill this has not happened to me - it did with Marvelon though! :-(
Also some people have been known to have suffered blood clots with the pill. To be honest I dont really know much about this ... ...my family have these sort of health problems. So, sorry, I cannot comment. Though if you have any major concerns you can speak to your GP or maybe even go to the NHS website where they answer all sorts of questions, so no doubt you will be informed fully here. Advice?
Well it is strongly advised that you speak to your GP or even a family planning doctor/nurse before starting the pill. This could be as I say above, due to genetic conditions or even ...

Advantages: Knowing when my period will arrive! Stops you from becoming pregnant! Disadvantages: Possibly risks such as Thrombosis, breast cancer and a long list of possible side effects!
...one I've tried out is Loestrin 30.
What is in the pack?
Contained in the box are 3 packs of pills each containing 21 tiny green tablets. The pack has got the days of the week written on the top of the foil in casing the tablet, so you can keep track if you've taken one for that day, or not.
You take a tablet roughly the same time every day for 21 days and then have a 7 day break for your 'Bleed' ( This is what it's called as your not supposed ... ...to try and regulate my body's estrogen levels, as the lining of my womb could be too thick and in turn may be causing the heavy bleeding.
The tablets are minute in size, easy to swallow and have no taste to them.
The leaflet that is in box explains about possible side effects that can occur and who can't take the pill. Your doctor will go through all of this with you anyway when he determines whether or not to put you on the pill, whether it is ...

Advantages: No weight gain!! Disadvantages: Moods, little bit of "spotting"
I first started taking Loestren 20 a week or so after my 16th birthday. I decided, at the legal age, I should go on the pill incase any "accidents" came up and I needed protection. I suppose, for a 16 year old to think like that, I must have been quite strange and presumptuous, but I didn't care too much and off I trotted to the doctors with my mom. He said he would prescribe me the best one for my age-range, and so I was given Loestren 20. I was ... ...in a sexual relationship. I, however, was in a relationship so I was happy on taking precautions. The packet
+++++++
It's a small silver packet, with 21 tablets in each sachet. In one box, you are given three sachets, which obviously last for three months, because of you're 7 day break. I like the fact that it tells you what day to take them on, because otherwise, I would be totally lost. The tablets are tiny and a baby blue colour. When to take ...

Advantages: Light periods, no side effects Disadvantages: no sex drive, no periods can be a bit scary!
Loestrin 20....
Each Loestrin 20 tablet contains 1mg of norethisterone and 20micrograms of ethinyloestradiol. No, I don't understand it either.
Like all other combined oral contraceptive pills, Loestrin 20 stops you from getting pregnant by thickening the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to travel to the womb. It also stops the ovaries from releasing an egg, and makes the womb lining so thin that it would be unlikely to accept a fertilised ... ...'period'.
I was prescribed Loestrin 20 after having a few problems with Mercilon (see other review). I was gutted as I loved Mercilon, but the side effects were too irritating. The first thing I noticed about this pill was the size of the packet!! With Mercilon and Microgynon (ugh), the pill packets were so tiny i could put them in my wallet with no bother. This pill strip was HUGE!
So, I started taking Loestrin, and my first packet was great, ...

Advantages: No weight gain, no nausea and no mental change Disadvantages: I wanted my breasts to grow!
I started taking the Loestrin 20 pill about 18 months ago due to having quite heavy and irregular periods, so the doctor prescribed me these after a course of iron tablets failed to help. I take mine at night before I get into bed because I tend to remember then rather than say the middle fo the day. Also, I am a sicker for getting tummy upsets etc and these rarely happen at night, so if I'm sick it isn't usually til at least 12 hours after taking ... ...Having only ever been on Loestrin 20 I can't say how it compares to toehr brands. However my sisters have been on Microgynon and Dianette and experienced mood swings and headaches as well as weight gain, so I'll stick with mine! I've had no problems with this but maybe next time I'll ask for the miracle pill that will increase my bust without any unwanted side effects - or start saving for plastic surgery, lol (joke)! ...

Advantages: Birth Control Works, Small and easy-to-swallow Disadvantages: Bad Side-effects - Breast problems, mood swings etc......
I am no longer using microgynon but I was on it for over a year and it did not go so well.
I started off on Loestrin - a pretty weak contraceptivepill to help regulate my periods more than anything. It was not helping so I asked my doctor to put me onto something a bit stronger, he put me on Microgynon.
Now, when it first started out I got on quite well with it. I did notice that my periods were a bit all over the place but I expected that with a new pill.
After a couple of months I started having some bad side effects - my periods started coming once every two weeks, and were lasting for 6-7 days at a time with heavy bleeding for about 5 of them. The cramps were very bad, and I was getting awful night sweats.
I got a more unusual side effect from this pill - I got some breast discharge (the pre-milk stuff apparently ...
Advantages: no periods, no period pain, dont have to worry about getting pregnant, Disadvantages: Weight gain, depression, loss of libido, short tempered, tearful,
bothered me before. I was also very tearfull and depressed and had no sex drive whatsoever. Despite all of this i would still recommend this to people as the first time i had it was great. When i had it taken out the Dr did advise me that it is common for people to experiance these side affects during their second time round which is a shame because if you can get on with it its fantastic. No periods and not having to worry about getting pregnant. I am now back on Loestrin 20 as i am told this is a very low dose of the pill and i am considering other methods of contraception which are more natural and not interfering with hormones. I would definatley recomend this as if you can get on with it its brillaint and if you cant its very quick and easy to have it taken out so its not that big a deal. ...
Advantages: Does the job, can be used up to 3 days later Disadvantages: Made me feel SO sick - the sickest ever, and it was all my own fault!
day. I took my second pill and the sickness seemed to die down. It taught me to be extra careful in future - I don't wanna go through that again! I'm now on Loestrin 20 (contraceptive - combined pill) and have not had to wory about the monring after pill.Thank god, because it was a nasty experience for me! There are many people out there who have unprotected sex and think "it's ok, I'll just take the morning after pill". Wel for anyone out there even considering that - DON'T!! It is EMERGENCY contraception, it'd be better to avoid it altogether. My circumstances were a little different, but even so I'd avoid needing to use this again.
Handy if you've had unprotected sex or the condom splits/falls off, but this sin't a method to rely on and all the ide effects I had have put me off it! It does what it is meant to do, so I will recommend ...
