Neelix the dog, as well as being the world’s greatest dog, is something of a gap-toothed gypsy. His teeth are in a shockingly poor state which has largely been caused by neglect in puppy and adolescent years combined with a wet food diet (before I got him). Not too long ago my cat, Snoopy, had to go to the vet to have a couple of teeth removed. I spent the whole day worrying over him, and was so relieved to get to the vet in the evening to pick him up. The relief didn't last for long. While I was cooing over Snoopy and tickling his chin through the bars of his carrybox, I became aware that the vet was saying something awful to me. I try to be a good pet owner, and having a cat who has had really bad gum disease and needed some teeth pulling out, I decided when we got our puppy last year that I was not going to let the same thing happen to him, so I looked at getting him a toothpaste. This particular toothpaste can be used by dogs or cats, and I prefer it to a tube of Virbac toothpaste I bought just for the cats. I almost laughed when my vet told me that my cocker spaniel Eddie needed toothpaste and that I or my husband needed to be the one to brush his teeth with it. Had he seen my Eddie, a lovely full of energy, tail always wagging, always bouncing, just grown out of being a puppy, dog? I love Eddie but he will not sit still for anything, well maybe a treat but then he is off again so to actually get ones hand inside his mouth to brush his teeth was going to be very difficult.
