I needed a replacement for my Thrustmaster Firestorm joypad, which I had tried to repair due to sticking buttons but it was getting past it. I saw a nest of these in PC world for under £20 so decided to gie it a go: I play a few driving sims on the PC and havent really the room for a wheel. The again, I did have a large wheel for the PS2 and always struggled to keep a straight line with it. I've always found joypads easier to control.
Gaming ====== Installation was pretty straightforward, there is a supplied driver disk, and the joypad communicates to the PC via a small IR reciever A little green LED on the unit tells flashes to tell you it is working, and the LED glows constant to show if it is recieveing information.
The rumblepad is physically smaller than my old Firestorm, and loses two buttons on the inside of the grips. This made things awkward as I used these two buttons quite alot while in the driving games to lok around the car. This just meant moving the options somehwere to another two buttons on the pad, but I would have to lose a couple of functions somehow.
Also due to the smaller size I found that I had to close my fingers more to hold the pad so I wouldnt drop it. This wasnt really a consciipus thought at first, but I realised that it was making my hands ache. I have got more used to it now, but the Firestorm never made my hands ache.
The joysticks themselves are housed in square sockets, which may seem a little unusual as you dont get a circular track if you push the stciks around the edges of their travel. But this means (for racing anyway). If you are not looking at your fingers, you can be a little off to one side and still be giving 100% in a given direction. Take the right lever for instance I use for throttle - I had noticed I wasn't pushing the lever dead ahead, but was slightly to one side, On the firestorm this would have only given me about 90% throttle, but with the rumblepad its still 100%, but then again, the firestorm had larger joysticks and were easier to feel where they where.
The batteries last along time. I have had this pad for a few months now, and the original batteries are still working.
Summary =======
I prefer the cordless joypad to the cable running around the desk and tangling with other equipment.- I would get another one, but only if I can't get hold of a thrustmaster firestorm cordless joypad. It can eb a little awkward where I live to get hold of Thrustmaster pads and joysticks - even by mail order.
Advantages: Cordless, Comfortable Disadvantages: None at the moment
...hassle of cords with the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad! This is my first cordless gamepad which has been great, i can go and sit on my bed at the other end of the room and control the game from all the way other there so its not only hassle free its roam free.
Now how about some specifications and opinions!
First of all the gamepad takes two AA batteries and the battery life lasts for 100 hours and has a proprietary power management system which ... ...would expect anything else from logitech though right? they are number one for a reason.
How about the package contents? well in the box you'll find the gamepad and the little 2.4Ghz wireless receiver which plugs into a USB port, and you will also have a software cd which allows you to install software to calibrate the gamepad and the drivers to make the gamepad work
The Logitech Cordless Rumblepad is compatible with all major operating systems ...

Advantages: Good design, not too expensive, simple installation. Disadvantages: Force feedback doesn't work properly, only average battery life.
...can't have everything.
The Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 ( I never saw the first but never mind) is a robust little pad. I have pretty large hands, and all the controls just sit in the right place. It has an 8 way directional pad/pov hat, two analogut controllers with integrated buttons, a further 10 buttons including four shoulder buttons and two on the centre console. Stylistically it resembles a slightly more chunky PS2 controller but as that ... ...is no bad thing. I haven't looked but I wouldn't be surprised to find an almost identical pad available as an aftermarket PS2 controller just with square circle triangle and cross on the four main action buttons.
Installation is relatively straightforward. The device is class compliant so you can just plug it into a USB port and it will work as a joypad. There is also a driver CD which allows you to configure the button configuration for specific ...

Hello, Cordless?
Well, I'm not generally a fan of wireless controller, because the first rule in the world for a gamer is to never use a WIRELESS MOUSE because you will get a little delay an that will be your end in a first person shooter game.
I just got this control from a gift, but I would rather prefer a wired one, because I don't like spending in batteries, (its need 2 AA), but I like to play with some freedom because of the cordless. The ... ...so heavy, and its rumble nicely the problem it doesn't rumble in every game, anyways I just use it when playing with emulators (gba, snes and ps1),
I got another cheap controller before and the Left key got stucked and I couldn't take it out, this won't happened in the Logitech, because a better button system.

Advantages: wireless, can use it anywhere! No trailing wires Disadvantages: can be lost as you've forgotten where u put it, batteries
...other pad I tried from logitech was pretty poor, as the buttons stuck. The pad itself is working on the 2.4ghz range, but fortuitously it doesn't interfere with 802.11b or g, so that's a big plus! and has a small USB interface to plug in the PC and then wire free operation! woohoo!
It's pretty cool to be able to play FFXI in bed, whilst the pc is on the other side of the room :-)
You can use more than 3 in one room, as I have and there is no problem ... ...each other (unlike some keyboards!)
Batteries are still going after 4 months... and so am expecting about couple months outta it! (and yes it does come with a couple of AA batteries)
It was instantly recognised under windows xp, tho am not so sure it'll just work straight outta the box in legacy OSes (win98 et al) ...
