The Logitech Cordless G7 mouse. ''Best Gaming Mouse on the market'' according to some PC Gamer magazines and reviewers.
I would have to agree in certain areas about that. Indeed It is a good mouse. It has a generally nice grip, looks good, and when needs be has a 2000dpi sensitivity. This truly is the mouse made for gamers.
After ordering my G7 off the Logitech website for what I thought at the time was a ridiculous amount. £70 when I brought it. It has since then gone down in price a considerable amount, to around £50 this is a fair price I would say. On arrival I got my new mouse out, knowing it was a wireless I knew there would be some installing to do. So once I found the disc, I whacked it in the drive, started loading the install up. Now here is where you really know if your a hardcore gamer or not. If the answer is yes, you can easily spend the next 20mins fiddling with various settings varying from DPI to scroll rate and battery life warnings. For me however, I just had them all on default to start (I did however fiddle abit later)
The functions on the G7 are numerous, I was surprised by the few buttons, but in actual fact there are several different buttons, such as the wheel left and wheel right. This allows you to scroll horizontally across web pages with ease. The sensitivity increase / decrease buttons are also one of the many useful functions on this mouse. It can easily be changed from general usage at say 300dpi to a gaming grade super sensitive mouse at 1000/1500/2000dpi at your choice with only the click of a button. Through the software you can set the 3 (5 max) different sensitivity settings, these can be set at all differnent gradients, at a small increase to a huge leap. Perfect for switching between web surfing and Cs:sing (CounterStrike)
Now for the complaints, the abit you should all pay attention too, generally the advantages are nothing special, most top end mouses offer them. So listen up to the faults
1) Battery Life - It says 3 days (Based on a daily usage of 4 hours) - Possibly more, but thats not the point, at the beginning I had no grumbles with the batteries. But now I've had it a year... the problems are beginning. The life of the battery has slowly dwindled. My current two batteries last on average about 4 hours each, which is quite annoying. I think this may have something to do with my overcharging of the batteries. I do take some responsibility for leaving them in for say an hour longer than needed. But the indicator for them being done is only a small LED and it is very easily missed. I would much prefer a on screen alert when it is done. Alas it does not include one.
2) General grime, all the general muck and sweat that gets in and around a normal mouse, it tends to find its way onto a mouse occurs on this too. Which is fine, usually you would just wipe it off, however, the plastic material the mouse is made from means that grime tends to stick to it, and makes it difficult to clean. Also, grime gets caught in the ''back'' button and under the wheel, which is impossible to remove, try as you may, It wont shift.
3) The lacker on the mouse that coats it, and gives it that grey color, well some of it is starting to come off, I already have a patch where almost all of it has gone, this is at the base at the back, where your wrist / base palm touches it. It shows that the quality is very poor, It may be quite old, but I didn't expect the plastic to be wearing away.
Apart from these grumbles this is a very good mouse. Would I buy it again? Answer. No, I'd go for a corded one, I can't be doing with swapping batteries. I would much prefer the cheaper and generally all round better G5
As a final note, I shall tell you the thing that impressed me most about it. The wireless range and quality. I could be in the next room and it still would work, I have had no problems with it at all in that respect. It worked perfectly, and the wireless receiver is rather small and can be placed almost anywhere, Its flex is also quite long meaning it can be put out of sight anywhere.
Advantages: Good shape Good responses Two batteries Disadvantages: Too sensitive Needs two batteries Gave me RSI symptoms
First impressions are good. Great looks, fancy packaging. Mouse feels comfortable in the hand (more on this later). Mouse moves easily on most surfaces and doesnt seem to need a mouse mat though I use one with a wrist rest for health purposes.
Installed easily and smoothly and was recognised by my windows XP Pro setup. I started up the configuration software and this was problem free and would be simple for the unsosphisticated user. Plugging the ... ...simple as falling off a log.
For gamers (such as myself) I immediately made way for the more complex tab (not clearly mark) in the SetPoint software. This enabled me to set-up 5 pre-defined resolutions (dpi) that are accessed and changed via two buttons behind the wheel on the top of the mouse.
Moving around windows and software applications was smooth though the extreme accuracy did sometimes make it difficult to alight on a button or control ...

...It's the little things logitech have thought about that make this mouse stand out from the crowd.
First off, it's comfy - Very comfy.
I find myself gaming for hours, with no problems whatsoever - I don't even use a mousemat as the high quality laser works just fine on my desk surface
Secondly, The little features that make this mouse shine
Batteries - The mouse has 2 hot-swappable batteries.
This means you can leave one battery to charge, while ... ...or begins to get low, simply swap them over and carry on - No hassle, no waiting to recharge.
Buttons - Obviously, left and right click - But the G7 offers more!
It has sensitivty controls, full, medium and low - Personaly i configured the medium setting to be my preffered sensitivty for desktop browsing - This means during gaming or any concentrated task i can lower or raise the sensitivty to my liking just by hitting a button.
It also has a ...

by the way, logitech support is 2nd to none.
Overall, If you need wireless and are right handed get the G7 no question. If you don't need wireless get a G5
p.s. In reply to the 8 hour battery life comment, that is from roughly constant use. The fact you have 2 batteries which can be quick changed doesn't make this a issue as you could change your battery every morning or night. And the charger for the battery is the receiver or at least the ...

...of the current crop of Logitech mice, the hand sits naturally and comfortably, with all the controls within a minute movement of the fingers.
You'll notice the lightweight of the unit, unlike most wireless systems, almost half the weight of my MX1000, and hasn't caused any strain through many hours of gameplay. Coupled with the easy glide feet this thing moves!!
A nice touch is the adjustable DPI setting just behind the wheel. Set it to 2000dpi ... ...of which, using this beast for applications, such as browsing is tops. Again with the lightweight and adjustable speeds, it adds to its overall useability.

Advantages: High DPI, Comfortable, Customizable buttons, Two batteries Disadvantages: SetPoint software, May not fit in some peoples hand
The Logitech G7 must be one of the best mice on the market today. It is capable of handling from 400-2000 DPI (Dots Per Inch) using the SetPoint software (Which I find disappointing at times when it doesn't detect my mouse, but at other times works flawlessly and allows you to customize which buttons do what, including changing what the tilt wheel does) which means you can go from pinpoint accuracy to blazing speed depending on which you need or ... ...the SetPoint software at anywhere between 400 and 2000 DPI, the buttons to change speeds are conveniently placed right below the scroll wheel. As long as you keep one of the batteries in the USB Charger/Receiver station (Might i add that the station looks very stylish indeed) your almost guaranteed to never be stuck in the middle of something and have to go hunting or out shopping for batteries that you needed at that critical moment. Just a push ...
