The mouse comes in a massive box which is in-itself heavy and makes you think you are getting more than you can see. The packaging does look good though and is obviously there to try and justify the high price.
Getting the mouse from the packaging is not the easiest of jobs and requires some thumb strength to prize it from its clear bulletproof vacuum moulded cover. The mouse comes with its own natty recharging stand, a transformer and a bluetooth connector.
Setting it up is the easiest of jobs and Vista recognised it immediately and didn't even require the software. I loaded the Logitech
software however so that I could configure the different options properly. The software also automatically checks to make sure the latest drivers are installed which is always useful.
The mouse is rechargeable and I have heard through other reviews that it will last a couple of weeks on one full charge. The software tells you accurately what the state of the charge is while the mouse has its own power bar showing the power remaining.
Now we get to the magic of the mouse. This mouse has potentially more functions than any rodent I have had before. It is also far more comfortable than any other mouse I have used. It seems to caress your hand rather than fit it with all the buttons falling just beneath a finger or thumb.
Beneath your thumb is a wheel. This wheel can (like most of the other buttons) be programmed to work in a specific way with a specific program. So for example, in photoshop it could be a crop button, changing the size of the crop box you are using while in word it could be a zoom button. It will customise itself to several different programs and the software comes already loaded with a number of different configurations already there to either accept or adapt. Included in the existing list are outlook, excel, word, photoshop, etc. The scroll wheels are not the usual cheap plastic but are a mixture of metal and rubber giving a very nice feel and presenting themselves as being fairly rugged as well as stylish. The movement of the scroll wheels is exceptionally smooth and uses something called 'Microgear Precision' movement meaning you can scroll through at a normal speed or, you can choose to go at a much fast speed automatically. This is very useful for those of us having to go through large Acrobat documents with hundreds of pages. In practise it works well. Above the thumb wheel are two buttons which I personally use as backwards and forwards to switch through documents.
The mouse has the usual moulded body buttons for the left and right clck function which are an invisible part of the design. Between the two primary buttons is the central scroll wheel. Again, this is a piece of beautiful engineering. It is silver and black rubber and feels top quality. It differs from the thumb wheel only by the fact that it has sideways movement as well. Just behind the central scroll wheel is a special button which is called the search button. By pressing this small chrome button, you can search the internet for a word or phrase without letting go of your mouse. You simply highlight the word you want to search for, press the button and voilla! A small window opens offering you a variety of search engines with the word already inserted. A neat little function which I've used a couple of times already.
Ergonomically, this mouse is the business. It fits your hand like a glove. Where your thumb rests is contoured like it was designed by a sculptor. It has for the most part, a rubberised surface which feels very comfortable even after a few hours continuous usage. All the buttons have a very positive sure feel and the whole unit feels very solid and actually does feel out of the ordinary.
Perhaps one of the best features is something you don't see it advertised for. This mouse moves with a silky smooth feel. Moving it across a ragged old mouse mat even feels like the device is on silky smooth castor's made by Lexus.
I can't sing the praises of this little expensive device highly enough. If you spend hours working the little rodent to death, do yourself a favour, don't look at how much more expensive this is than your high street special mouse, decide whether you want the best mouse on the market. If the answer is yes, then buy this mouse! It is a real pedigree show stopper.

I looked at these the other week. The problem I have is that being left-handed, most of the dips and bumps are on the wrong side. My oh so considerate partner bought one very similar anyway which I can't use
