I was bough the logitech quickcam messenger for christmas and i believe it cost arounf the £50 mark from argos. Its slightly cheaper now and I know you can get them for around £30 brand new, not to mention much cheaper for used ones from Ebay.
The cam was very quick to install and requires no technical knowledge whatsoever, in fact, if youre capable of reading this review then youll have no problems installing the camera! All you do is put the accompanying disc into the drive and follow the instructions, a few clicks here and there and youre away!
The camera can be used to broadcast live video, either via a website or through a messenger such as MSN. It can take photographs and record videos with sound. There is a focus ring on the camera which means you can adjust the focus and make the picture quality very clear indeed. I personally dont see the need for more expensive cameras when sucha cheap one works so well, the quality of the pricier cameras cant be that much better than the quality of the quickcam. Good lighting in the room youre using the camera in is quite important for getting the best possible picture. The camera can be moved around easily enough as it sits on a little stand, its very light and very portable.
I think the camera would be better if the cable was just that little bit longer. I think it is a couple of metres long at present. I had some problems when installing the camera because i had some missing files on my pc, so i emilled logitech and the customer service team were extremely helpful and even gave me links to websites from which i could download the necessary files.
One fault that i have noticed with the camera, is if you play with the focus ring alot then it tends to crash and freeze up and this affects the whole computer, which needs to be re started before the camera will work again. Also the cameras speed can be affected by the speed of your computer, if you are running other programmes it may become very slow in relaying live video, but when the pc is working at its best there is almost no delay in relaying video.
All in all its a good camera and has taken alot of very good quality pictures. I feel confident that i can rely on the customer serive team if anything should go wrong with my camera because they have been so helpful to me already.
