My husbands family all live aboard, so we always use the internet to communicate with them, so I decided to buy a web cam so that they could see us as well as speak to us.
THE LOOK
This web cam is very small, the main part, which is white, is about the size of a golf ball; this part has the lens in the front. The 'ball' as it were, sits on a black base so that it does not roll around; the overall look is quite similar to that of most web cams. There is a cable that comes out of the back, this cable plugs into your PC's USB port. With the web cam you get an instruction manual, a CD to install the web cam and a 2-year guarantee.
EASE OF USE
Before you can use this web cam you have to install it, this is all explained in the instruction manual, but basically just involves putting the supplied CD in you PC and plugging the web cam into the USB port when instructed to do so.
The cable from the web cam is not the longest of cables so you are quite restricted as to where you can put it, but I think most people just put them on the top of their monitors away! Apart from me, mine is on a small unit about a foot above my computer and it just reaches.
QUALITY
I don't think the built in microphone is very good, I have only used it once to see if it worked as I have a microphone on my PC anyway. The sound quality was very poor and the person I was speaking to could barely hear me.
The picture is good for the price I paid, it was only about £15, and as I said before we only use it for talking to family and for that purpose it is fine.
With this web cam you get a 2 year guarantee, which is double your average 1 year, so they must me made to last.
THE VERDICT
I would recommend this web cam if you just want a cheap one to use to see friends and family while you chat, however I would invest in a separate microphone, if you need one, as the built in one is a bit poo.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
I have a separate headset and mic combined. My Webcam is a Labtec which my son gave me and it was about £20. The picture is great and I talk to my friend in NZ although we find on dial-up the lack of bandwidth makes the sound a little choppy. We used sound only and that solved the problem. I must get Broadband. Dave
