If you cannot afford the best cam out there then this will certanly suit your instant messaging needs. I picked one up a while ago and I found it well worth the money.
Now. I have to say its the easiest thing to install. I use windows XP and the moment i plugged it in my USB slot it was detected and installed automatically in a matter of seconds. No need for the installation cd which i found to be very useful. (and yes its stable).
The picture quality is above average but i constantly find it to fluctuate. In natural light (not direct sunlight as it can damage the camera) the picture quality is extremely good and clear. But in artificial light the quality can seem a little... well... lets just say it performs better in natural light but it still does the job.
I have only used the microphone on it once and I was not too impressed at all. I recommend a seperate microphone.
However taking pictures is pretty simple. Load up the camera in windows explorer by clicking on the drop down menu in the address bar and select "Logitech quickcam messanger". This will load up the camera and display a live feed in the middle of the screen. then to take a picture simply press the button on top of the camera. If you wish to take mutiple poses i suggest getting someone else to push the button or click the "take new picture" text next to the live feed screen.
I find the cable length to be satisfactory although it could be a problem if your PC was on the floor and your monitor was on a desk.
If your really confident you can mess about with the cameras settings that control Gamma correction and contrast. This is done through any instant messanger you use. By going into web camera settings (or equivalent).
Overall this camera performs to all expectations and its cheap! Make yourself known to the world! But dont expose it to direct sunlight or you could find yourself buying a replacement.
Final notes: the speed of your camera while in an instant messanger depends on both of you and your friends internet connection speed. Use Windows XP to avoid installation headaches.
