The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 is a well designed, compact and easy to use webcam. It comes equipped with an in-built microphone, the ability of recording high-quality videos with sound, as well as being able take still pictures and, of course, to send live videos and sound allowing you to have online video conversations.

Logitech have clearly thought carefully about designing this camera. A green LED shows when the camera is active; there is 'Capture' button on the top, allowing you to take pictures without having to enter the software; the base is flexible, allowing you to sit it on both CRT monitors and TFT's (or "flat-screens"); also, they've included a "privacy-device", (which is actually just a piece of plastic ... more
The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 is a well designed, compact and easy to use webcam. It comes equipped with an in-built microphone, the ability of recording high-quality videos with sound, as well as being able take still pictures and, of course, to send live videos and sound allowing you to have online video conversations. Included in the package is a USB 2.0 cable, the CD providing the drivers and software required, as well as a headset (with microphone) should you prefer not to use the PC speakers and webcam's in-built microphone.
I found the 'Pro 5000' was both easy to install and use. Having installed the drivers and QuickCam software provided, it was simply a matter of plugging the webcam in, ensuring my MSN Messenger was configured and then I was able to hold video conversations with friends and family.
Logitech have clearly thought carefully about designing this camera. A green LED shows when the camera is active; there is 'Capture' button on the top, allowing you to take pictures without having to enter the software; the base is flexible, allowing you to sit it on both CRT monitors and TFT's (or "flat-screens"); also, they've included a "privacy-device", (which is actually just a piece of plastic that rotates around the camera, allowing you to cover the lens). Whilst this is very simple, it is very effective and to me demonstrates that some thought has gone into the design and layout of the 'Pro 5000'.
The software provided is easy enough to use and also surprisingly powerful. Some features include: Being able to adjust light levels manually, (though I have to admit the automatic feature is very good), flip the display image and adjust the microphone level. There is also a "Track Face" feature which allows you to keep your face centred as you move around, (although there are obviously limits to how far you can move). Another interesting feature with regards to the software is the ability to super-impose 'avatars' on top of your image. This includes static pictures, (such as moustaches, crowns, etc.) which try and keep up with your movements, (though you have to be careful not to move to quickly) and also animated characters, (an alien, a wizard, etc.) that, once configured, will move their lips, eyelids, etc. based on your movements. This, however, can take some practise to configure probably and, whilst it is entertaining, its appeal does run the risk of wearing off after a while. I think this feature would appeal more to parents who wish to keep their children entertained or distracted.
My biggest gripe with the 'Pro 5000' so far is to do with the recorded videos. After recording for about 45 seconds or so, the audio track goes out of synch with the video. There is a possibility this could be related to my PC; however, given that it is almost as new as the webcam, I sincerely doubt that to be the case. I have yet to do any playing around to see if I can correct this, so it may be possible that there is a way around this, but I personal believe it simply shouldn't be the case in the first place.
Overall, I think this is a very good webcam. Some people may be a little put off by the price, as there are cheaper webcams available; however, I have seen other, less expensive Logitech cameras which do not have quite as good an image as the 'Pro 5000' and certainly don't have the level of features available.
I would say the decision to purchase this webcam over others should be based on ultimately what you would like to be able to do. If all you're interested in is live conversations, than perhaps a cheaper webcam would be more suited; however, if you'd like to produce decent quality videos and still pictures, I think the 'Pro 5000' is well worth the money.
Advantages: High quality in low light, good sound, fun to play with face-tracking Disadvantages: Dodgy software, not 30fps as advertised when using large pixel setting
The Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 certainly looks good from the outside, and at first glance it performs well - But there are several problems with the software that drives it. The software from Logitech causes many people, including myself, to have several problems that don't just affect the camera's performance, but cause problems with Windows XP (particularly the display of the 'quick launch' icons). The other main problem people get, seemingly those ... ...of the Quickcam software. The Logitech forums give more specific details from many unhappy users. I did not personally get the BSOD but version 10 of the software did mess up my quick launch icons, so I stick with the version it came with (V9.5).
The built-in microphone works well, but if you have the facility enabled which allows better audio (called AEC), then your surround sound 5.1 speakers will not work, but will play only in normal stereo. ...

Advantages: great picture, good microphone, able to use with majority of messenger programs including festoon, MSN, Yahoo Disadvantages: can be hard to use additional functions, need a good light source to callibrate
I have to admit this is my first webcam, however all I can say is I have nmot been disappointed so far. I have been very much impresesed with the features and capabilities I have seen of this webcam so far. It is more expensive than most of the other webcams I have seen in use so far which have acceptabloe quality, but am glad I decided to pay a bit more for such a good webcam.
The image you get is of very good quality, as has been told to me by ... ...microphone is of a reasonable quality. Provided with b the webcam you also get a headset, which can improve voice and speech quality in conjuction with the webcam, as well as for private conversations. As a note the headset can be used also for VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) programs as well as in addition to usage with the webcam itself. The headset I believe is also one of their higher range of headsets with microphone, which combined with ...

I bought this webcam almost a year ago now with the idea of doing some video conferencing with my friends. So far I have only used it a few times and only once with each person I have used it with. It is just so funny to start with, then it gets embarrassing and eventually it gets turned off. I have not managed to get the sound quality to improve and at the moment there is a very annoying echo. I have used the webcam with MSN and Skype and both were ... ...to take photos is fun but the quality isn't good, certainly not as good as my 3mega pixel digital camera so I don't use it often.
Had a few laughs secretly filming my other half. When he was doing some exercises was best!
A bit too expensive for me seen as I haven't used it much. ...

modem is included in the price but you can add a Dell v92 Data/Fax Modem for £23.50. I checked this one out before making this selection because I was worried about whether or not I had to have one. The caption underneath the modem option reads "enhance your desktop and connect to the World Wide Web with your modem". Well, could I connect without one? What's all this fancy router and microfilter stuff BT sent me when I signed up for Broadband then? Check what you've got before you add a modem because chances are that like me you don't need one built into your PC. There's one incorporated into my Broadband equipment.
