Speakers. Fascinating aren't they? These days they come in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours, from lowly cheap desktop speakers to full blown surround sound perfection. I would probably be right in guessing that nearly every single home, workplace, school has at least one set of speakers for some purpose or another, whether for their hi-fi system, ipod, tv, computer or whatever else ... ...a sleek, professional design. These Logitech speakers are good enough to tick all of those boxes and more. I have them on my desk at work, and gone are the days of boredom in the afternoons, now I have these I can listen to music to my hearts content at a decent quality..... why did I buy them? I was fascinated by the USB connection which I have never seen on speakers before.
Speakers. Fascinating aren't they? These days they come in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours, from lowly cheap desktop speakers to full blown surround sound perfection. I would probably be right in guessing that nearly every single home, workplace, school has at least one set of speakers for some purpose or another, whether for their hi-fi system, ipod, tv, computer or whatever else you can think of. The truth remains however that with the thousands of different sets of speakers available on the market, there are a thousand different sound qualities, niggles, a thousand different levels of tinniness or bass bashing. For me, whats important when I consider a set of speakers is the clarity of the sound. An ideal set of speakers for me would have sufficient volume without distortion, excellent clarity of sound and have a sleek, professional design.
How did I come about buying them?
Well to be honest, I was nagged into buying them. We recently replaced most of our computers at work and the new computers came without built in speakers. Unfortunately many of the (somewhat lazier) members of staff had become used to getting sound from their computers (when they were supposed to be working) so it didn't take long before a string of complaints started coming into my office from disgruntled workers desperate for sound. After about four or five people had complained, I set about trying to find a cheap set of speakers that I could buy several sets of and dish out to these people as necessary. I didn't want to spend too much as aside from not having a large enough budget, it would not be good practice to be seen wasting money on speakers for staff that they shouldn't be using anyway! A quick trawl of our catalogues led me to these little beauties at a very very reasonable price. Like I said, I was more drawn to them because of the novelty of having a USB connection but the price was obviously very important. To be honest, for those lazy people who wanted sound at their desks I wasn't too bothered about the quality that these speakers could produce, but having kept a set on my desk for my own use I am more than impressed.
The Design and Build
For a set of speakers with such a small price tag I am impressed by the build quality. They are made from solid plastic and are very sturdy. They have even stood up to the rigors of being dropped on numerous occasions (once from a great height) and they still work perfectly and have no visible signs of damage. The plastic is black and shiny on the front with a more matte finish on the back and sides. Considering they are quite thin, they stand up well on the desk with no wobbling at all. The speaker part itself is covered in a fine quality material which has also managed to sustain no damage at all. What is handy with these speakers is that they have buttons on the front that control the volume, so you can quickly turn volume up and down, or mute it entirely at the push of a button on the speakers rather than having to hurriedly try and do it from the computer. They also have a little light on the front in orange that reads "DIGITAL". Not quite sure why that is there but I like anything sparkly so thats all good with me.
Installation
Installation couldn't be any easier. There is no complicated software to install, simply plug the USB lead into a spare port on your computer and you are good to go. Cleverly, adjusting the volume on the speakers also adjusts the volume on the computer so they work with two-way communication. Thats all there is to it. Once they are all plugged in and settled on your desk just pop in your favourite CD, grab a mug of chicken soup and sit back and relax (you might get a few funny looks from colleagues if you do this at work though).
Sound Quality
Quite simply I cannot fault the quality of the sound these little babies produce at all. I have had the volume up on full with no audible distortion at all. Every sound that has come through these speakers has reached my ears as a joyous sound.
And the price?
........ Wait for it..... just £9.00. I bought my speakers from Misco in bulk and we did get a corporate discount on the list price, but to the general public (who can also buy from Misco) they are just £9.00.
