Intro
I came across the new headset while browsing for christmas gifts earlier this month. I'd pretty much decided on what to buy everyone, with the exception of my cousin. Now, my cousin is probably even more of a computer nerd than myself, I'd remembered he'd mentioned lacking a decent headset to go with his new creative labs soundcard.
And so began the hunt for a decent headset for under about 30 pounds, having bought several logitech products on and offline I immediately knew where to search. Upon browsing a few sites, I discovered the Logitech headset 20 on www.novatech.co.uk. Novatech were offering the headset for about 27 pounds including VAT (plus the standard 3 quid delivery), not bad at all for the specs, plus one of those new fangled noise cancelling mics!
It was settled, upon buying the headset it was promptly delivered and then wrapped, a testiment to the good service of the people at novatech. My cousin was chuffed with the gift, and a few days after Christmas I had a chance to test out the headphones at his house!
The Headphones
The headphones themselves are very aesthetically pleasing. They boast an extremely modern design, and while made almost entirely of plastic, the product comes across as very well made. The headset also comes with leather/cloth ear pads, making them highly comfortable while listening to ones song playlists or blasting away at aliens on Half Life 2.
The headphones are also extremely easy to get started with, you simply plug them into a USB port at the back of your computer, thats it! After doing that the mic and sound work fine. The fact the headphones are USB means that they can't be connected to ones speakers, instead they can just be used alone. This is great if you have rather limited deskspace, as speakers do tend to take up a fair bit of space.
The overall quality of the sound is very good for the price, especially if you reinforce it with an excellent soundcard. While not sounding brilliant, considering they cost only 27 quid the sound quality is pretty good. I also noticed while browsing through my cousins music playlist that the headphones handle a wide variety of genres well, meaning they possess excellent facilities for both treble and bass music. So whether your a fan of rock, pop, classical, soul, disco, whatever, the headset should do pretty much any genre justice with its excellent sound.
The microphone is another brilliant feature the Headset 20 possesses. Its main perk is that it features a noise-cancelling device, this means the annoying "airy" sound that older mics tend to give out during use is completely non-existant. This makes conversion via Counterstrike or an instant messaging service like MSN or AIM very simple, the person/people at the other end can hear your voice easily. Aswell as this, the mic is equipped with voice recognition, meaning it can be used in conjunction with the latest versions of Viavoice and be used to full effect when dictating documents.
The only real disadvantage Logitech's headset 20 has is its own construct. While the design is excellent and looks great, it does come across as somewhat flimsy. While not overly flimsy, I would certainly exercise caution while handling them. For this reason, the Headset 20's aren't very suitable around young children due to fragility. Other than this, the headphones are very good, and with any luck they might be even cheaper in the January sales!
Also, the headphones come with a massive TWO year warranty, so if they do happen to break or malfunction, you can get a refund or replacement from Logitech themselves!
Conclusion
Logitech's Headset 20 is definately one of the finest headset models available for under 30 pounds, with the excellent sound quality, coupled with a high quality ultra-modern microphone, the Headset 20 represents a dynamic and downright excellent piece of technology, its only downside being the slightly flimsy design. And with a two year warranty, you can be sure it'll last awhile. I heartily recommend this product.
