when i first recieved this mouse, it was packaged well and came with a nice user friendly set up, drivers and sofware... it did take me a few hours to get used to not moving my hand all about the place, and for a split second was getting confused as to why the cursor wasnt moving when i moved the mouse! but it didnt take long to get used to it at all, and is a lot easier to use than the standard arm flailing of a regular mouse!
as you can see from the picture, the mouse wheel is manipulated by the thumb, which is a brilliant idea, and one of those things that should have been invented first! although it does lack left handed capabilities for obvious reasons, but its that easy to use that even a left handed person could probably cope.... it has the normal left mouse button, right mouse button and centre scroll wheel which is also a normal push type button that can be pressed in.. the buttons can be a little sensitive and a rested finger weight will press it in causing a click! for me its usually the right button...
the mouse ball is situated in a cup on the left hand side, which is used to feedback the movement of the ball to laser-type sensor under the ball and slightly to the side of the ball itself... which gives the user a complete 3d-like experience and with a flick its the other side of the screen, and the ball wheelspins too with a quicker flick!.. and is great for watching the cursor zip across the screen, but you still have that feel of control at low speed, which is more important than cursor racing and wheelspins....
the whole mouse suprisingly fits very confortable in the hand and is suitable for small hands and large hands alike! your hand just seems to wrap around it in a natural position and feels very well designed shape wise, and could sit like that for a good couple of hours if used semi-professionaly... and there is a place for all the non used fingers to seat themselves in a very comfortable position... no excess digits being left un-cared for!
i went for the wireless option as my pc setup isnt the normal office/desk type, but next to the sofa.. its wireless capability has a fairly good range, and the battery lasts for a long time suprisingly.. an uninterupted signal will pickup in excess of 6 feet away, however as with all wireless things, the further away you are, the reductions in "updates per second" do start to show after this 6 foot mark! but the wireless reciever that plugs into the USB (it came with a USB to PS/2 adapter too!!!!) has approximately 4-5 feet of flex, and height of the reciever doesnt really affect the signal relay either.....
although the whole thing looks a little dull (especially the reciever) its robust, takes a knock, and still performs nicely... although a dropped mouse can send its ball flying and rolling off under something.. or someones foot!!! but, it has to come out because it does get dirty reletively quickly compared to a regular mouse and there is nothing worse than a dirty ball! but in the same breath, having a bit of resistance in its movement can help with its accuracy, as i have found it a little to easy to move the ball without turning its sensitivity down a little... and hovering over something small and your thumb moving as you go to press the button can be a little frustrating.... and trying to take your thumb off the ball before clicking is a no no.... especially with a tacky thumb... so keep it clean, wash your hands if a little hot, and a squirt of furniture polish in a duster will make the movement of the mouse feel like new again... all will work swimmingly.... but dont forget to clean off the white "bearing" type non-moving little seating guides on the inside of the cup... as they can start growing tiny islands of dust around them over time...
all in all, it is a fantastic mouse for the money... in reality the next step up is double the price of this in terms of quality, durability, and design.. but it far superseeds the regular underside balled mouse, and certainly makes light work out of everyday use, saving yourself from early Repetative Strain Injury and getting one shoulder like sylvester stallone...
so as a mouse goes it seats reletively comfortably between a regular mouse and the graphics tablets, so i suppose its all dependant on budget as to whether this is for you... if you can spare the money then you wont get better for the price.. but in my personal opinion, i would rather have a tablet than fork out x amount on the more expensive trackball type of mouses as it is just an upside down mouse at the end of the day, and for twice the price of this, i would have thought you would be into more than just everyday home use...
in summery this is a fantastic mouse, its price over useability ratio is well worth it, and it does offer a great amount of control without ending up with friction burns on your arms... and you can also move the whole mouse without loosing its position on screen which can be handy as sometimes the cursor on screen can go walk abouts and sitting there moving your hand in circles with a look of sheer dedication can be quite a comical sight!!!!
although it may just be my mouse, it does have an issue with connecting sometimes, and several times i have switched the pc on to a none working mouse, and it seems to be a great fun time getting it to reconnect again... but rarely does that happen, but could be frustrating to some people, especially when you have to try and get something fine enough to push the tiny connect button on the mouse!!!
but all in all, i recommend it... easy for anyone to use, and offers enough useability to push it ahead of the normal balled/lazer mouses.... i dont think it will disappoint!
Advantages: Comfortable, good-looking, east to setup, tidy, long-lasting Disadvantages: Accuracy not the best
...wanted for my birthday. "A Logitech Trackman Marble trackball", I replied.
6 years on I still have that Trackman. Sure, it looks a bit dated and the logo has rubbed off from all the hours at work using it but for its extremely advanced age it is still in perfect working order and if it wasn't for my need for gadgets I would still use it. So how does Logitech's new Trackman compare?
I purchased Logitech's Cordless Trackman Wheel (USB) for about ... ...mouse comes with the usual Logitech setup software which is comprehensive, allowing each button to be everything from a SHIFT key to allowing it to launch Explorer.
The mouse is basically self-cleaning as it has no rollers, instead using a light fired at the ball to judge movement, but if you do want to clean the inside you just poke a pen into the hole underneath and pop the ball out. A quick wipe around the cavity and the ball, and you're off ...

...then read on.
The Logitech trackman mouse is the greatest and easiest mouse you will ever use. Its main advantages are as follows
1st You don't need a flat surface- Have you ever stat at home on the computer and tried to use your standard mouse while sitting on the couch with the mouse pad on the arm rest or even your lap (who hasn't) not an easy task as most arm rests and your lap are curved and you really need a flat surface to use a standard ... ...that if you have a Logitech wireless mouse and also a Logitech wireless keyboard connected to a single computer your ok you wont get any signal interference BUT if your like me and have 2 computers both with a wireless Logitech keyboard and trackman mouse then you will get some signal interference depending on how close the sensors are. If they are in separate rooms you should be fine but in the same room 2 people trying to work will find that your ...

Advantages: Great design, good range Disadvantages: Not for left handers (although you can probably get a left handed versions)
Up until two weeks ago I had one of these, then it got eaten by the dog, maybe one of the downside of it NOT being on a lead (the trackball not the dog!).
The main thing that attracted me to it at first was the cordless part, with the computer being in the lounge and a dog running around there was always a major danger of the dog running between the armchair and the computer, and running into the lead (not good for any party involved really). Installation ... ...receiver into the mouse port, put the batteries into the trackball, and your off! The range is quite impressive too, if I’d have had a decent sized monitor I would have been able to operate the PC from the comfort of my sofa.
With the lack of a picture on Ciao I shall describe the layout of the Trackman:
Moving aside from the traditional trackball layout (ball in the middle and buttons either side), the Trackman looks more like mouse, it has the ...

Advantages: Cordless, shape, no rsi, Disadvantages: too big for little hands, short infra red range
...The fact it’s made by Logitech gave me bags of confidence. It looks really sturdy and I could imagine it would do you years and would quite happly handle being dropped.
I so wanted to love this and be in awe of it's superior to the mouse, to jump up with excitement how it fitted like a glove to my hand, meaning I could spend days at the pc with no more sore wrists R.S.I a thing of the past but sadly that's not my experience. I found it slightly ... ...to be completely comfortable and use it at the same time. I found precision graphic work easier with a non trackball mouse, and you can’t be that far from the receiver to start having problems, also sometimes not having a cord has a downside when your 4 yr wants to run off with the mouse. So not a happy ending for that mouse, but it has not put me off trackballs I really like the idea of them and if I can get one that fits my hand better I’ll maybe ...

Advantages: No wire, no problem of the colour fading to a creamy yellow that happens with white mice Disadvantages: Uncomfortable, Bad for games
...As with my previous logitech mouse you have the ability to change the motion settings of the mouse e.g. put acceleration on low, med, or high and change the speed at which the cursor moves in general. However, I noticed that with acceleration off, if you try and move the cursor quickly you'll get decelleration and the cursor will not move that far... this is very inconvinient if you want to play FPS games online. I also found that it was difficult ... ...e.g. when trying to close a solitaire window I ended up maximising it, a problem I raely faced with my last mouse. Because I require these functions, I have ended up plugging my old mouse back in and will most likely package this new one up and give it to someone for xmas. ...
