I purchased these speakers for my laptop because laptop speakers usually sound tinny and very quiet.
I had a small budget of £40. The speakers were going to be used for mainly music, DVD and film watching and games.

I loaded up my laptop and put on some heavy metal music. I switched on the speakers, turned the sub upto full and slowly increased the volume (controller on right satellite). The first impressions vere excellent. Bass was nice and clean, not too rumbly. Treble was good because of the dual drivers in the satellite. Mid range was also good, but very slightly lacking. An adjustment of the equilizer on my laptop fixed this. At a quarter volume, you can feel the floor vibrating and air coming from the sub port. Man, I like these speakers!
I tried a DVD, turned the volume up a bit and was amazed! I heard sounds I never knew were there before! Explosions, cars and fighting scenes were very realistic. And you can feel explosions and gunshots because of the deceivingly small sub woofer.
There are a few minor issues, like every product that exists. Firstly, the control for volume is on the right speaker, which may be a little annoying for people. It is not a major issue for me, but a wired remote would be better. When you use headphones, the volume control on the speaker does not control them, you have to use your computer's volume controller to change it. The stands for the speakers twist around to mount them on the wall, but they are not adjustable in directions. Again, this is no real issue for me, they sit on either side of my laptop and are tilted up slightly to point to me on my chair.
Anyway, these speakers are LOUD! I managed to crank it up to 3 quarters volume and it could be heard outside. If you have neighbours, you might have a few complaints from them. Be warned!
Overall, these speakers are great value. For £35, I wasn't expecting much, but these blew me away. The quality is excellent for the average user, fine for a small to medium room or maybe even a fairly large room! They could do with a bit more mid-range, but for the price I am not complaining! I definitely reccomend these.

I bought my Logitech X-230 speakers as a replacement for some Creative Soundworks speakers. Those themselves weren't terrible but I wanted something black to match my computer monitor as well as adding a subwoofer.
Many people may recommend a surround sound 5.1 speaker setup. I say that decision comes down to how you intend to use the speakers. If you use your computer as your main games and movie entertainment machine, I suggest you consider ... ...2.1 speaker setup like these Logitech speakers.
Just a quick note when it comes to 5.1 and 2.1; the big number represents the number of smaller satellite speakers you'll place around yourself and the 1 represents the subwoofer speaker which sits on the ground and makes the low rumbling noises.
--Set Up--
Once you bring these speakers home, you'll want to set them up and get listening. It is suggested that you place the large subwoofer speaker ...

...of an improvement, but this Logitech system is far from that.
For a start, all you need to do is unpack the box, put the two speakers on your desk or wherever you want, and the subwoofer on the floor (technically it can go anywhere, but on the floor produces the best output). Then just connect the speakers to the headphone socket on your computer, plug in the mains and you're ready to go - it's as simple as can be.
And for such a simple upgrade, ... ...speakers produce crisp, clear sound right up to very high volumes (and they can go pretty loud!).
The subwoofer also produces a lovely, balanced bass, although the bass setting doesn't need to be very high at all for the best sound. Slightly annoyingly, for some, is the fact that the bass knob is on the back of the subwoofer. However, this doesn't affect me as I have the subwoofer right at my feet.
The price is also brilliant: you should be paying ...

Advantages: Great sound quality, simple setup, not too expensive. Disadvantages: Slightly short satellite cables.
These speakers impressed me so much I bought two sets!
Originally I bought a set of these as the new monitor on my PC didn't have any speakers, and my old crusty speakers really weren't up to much. I didn't have the space or budget to get a large 5.1 surround set, so I plumped for this rather nice set of 2.1 active speakers. The problem was, I liked the sound out of my PC so much, and my TV was rattling loads when the volume got too high, so I put ... ...the sound. I liked the result so much I decided to leave them on my TV and buy another set for the computer.
The speakers themselves aren't perhaps the most stylish, but what they lack in design, they make up for in sound quality. The satellites have two 2 inch (5cm) drivers which provide excellent mid to high range sound. The response is quite flat here so most sounds are faithfully reproduced. The sub for such a small unit is well designed and ...

Advantages: Good sound, low price, good bass (not the fish) Disadvantages: Neighbours live too close
I just got these off Amazon and they arrived today, so I've spent a good few hours testing them out with a diverse range of music from the depths of heavy metal, through the near psychotic speeds of drum and bass, to chilled out classical stuff. What can I say?! £30 well spent here!

When you receive your box, which measures something like 15 inches by 10 inch square you might expect the speakers inside to be fairly large. On ... ...inside is occupied by what appears to be a modest subwoofer. A separate box that is about 4 inches deep houses the two satellite speakers. The speakers are well presented in a semi-matte black finish, and unlike the speakers you traditionally receive when you buy a PC from Curry's (no offence, honest), the speakers seem very well made - in fact, I'm resting my legs on the sub as I type, and I'm not exactly small and lightweight. They haven't creaked ...

Advantages: Compact, deep loud sub, styling of satellites, competitive pricing. Disadvantages: Much more powerful systems available.
These speakers were purchased from Argos for £40 to use on my laptop. However I've since learnt I could have bought them for half this amount. The integrated laptop speakers were just to frustratingly quiet to listen to music. The subwoofer provides high quality bass and even when the volume is maxed the quality stays high. A lot of more expensive and powerful systems are not this crisp. For a small room they are ideal. You should only get bigger ... ...downstairs I can hear the bass rumbling away even on half volume.
The styling of the satellites is good, and the size of the subwoofer is acceptable if you are short on space. The quality is just brilliant though and crisp just as stated, if quality is bad it is your computer or power supply, not these. The headphone style connector makes connection to mp3 players and some televisions possible too. A two-way adapter for the signal source was included ...

Advantages: Look good, sound good, user-friendly, easy to set up, plug into any headphone jack Disadvantages: A lot of wires
I was bought these speakers after previously owning LogitechX230 which had been subject to wear and tear.
I was extremely impressed with the price vs quality of these speakers.
They are easy to set up with colour-coded cables so you can't go wrong, they're easy to plug into a headphone jack, so they're really versatile, even your iPod.
They quality of the sound is very good for the price. There is a control attached to them where you can alter the volume and also bass. On the control is also an on/off button.
I find being able to alter the bass extremely useful, especially as I have a flat and late and night I'm never sure if the bass is too loud for my neighbours!
The only problem I have with the speakers is that there are a lot of cables, this is due to the fact that there are 2 speakers attached to the subwoofer, then ...

Advantages: Great VALUE! Athlon 64 processor, fairly sleek Disadvantages: Graphics card starting to show age now
remains clear and readable from all positions. The only minor issue is that there is no little LED light above the screen like ThinkPads for working in darker conditions. If only more manufacturers started incorporating this feature.
Below are a pair of stereo speakers, but like most laptop speakers they are useless and sound tinny and lack bass. I use my LogitechX230 2.1 speakers which sound excellent (especially for metal!) and Sennheiser earphones if I am away with my laptop.
Performance:
I purchased the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0GHz) processor model (it is available also in 3000+, 3400+ and 3700+ models). It is a powerful 64 bit CPU, so I would be able to run 64 bit applications and operating systems in the future. It seems adequate for my needs, and can cope with media encoding and gaming fine.
Graphical performance is very good ...

Manufacturer's product description
Crank up the audio on your PC with this 2.1 speaker system and enjoy clean, crisp, consistent sound from your games, music, and more. The Logitech X-230's high-tech subwoofer adjusts itself dynamically to deliver distortion-free bass. And the two wall-mountable satellite speakers use Logitech's patented FDD2 technology to eliminate the uneven sound response created by conventional dual-driver designs. The result: a clear, uniform sound field without the "hot spots" and inconsistency of other dual-driver satellites.
