I spent a long time looking for a set of speakers to use upstairs with my PC. I listen to all types of music and I'm quite fussy about sound quality, but I didn't want to spend a fortune. My first port of call was the Bose shop down the road from my house. Their 2.1 speakers sounded brilliant but i did not want to spend £200 on PC speakers. So next I went to the internet to look at what other options were around and which was the best value for money. After some deliberation I went for the Z2300, these seemed the best compromise between price and performance. For around £90 you get a large, cubic, sub woofer, two small sattelites the neccesary connecing leads and power supply, and a controll unit with which you can change the level of bass and the level of volume. All the units are in silver and black and are they are all stylishly designed with a robust, well-built feel to them. The bass box in particular, is a very heavy, robust unit. There is no magnetic shielding on the bass box and if you put it to close to your monitor or a television you will see lots of pretty colours (at least you can see that there are some serious magnets inside this puppy, which is quite reassuring). Although not as acoustically adept as the Bose Companions the sound quality of these speakers is staggering for the paltry price, particularly the bass sound which is quite fearfull and actually drowns out the bass on my separates system downstairs (even when the remote bass controll is turned right down!). If anything the bass might be a bit much for some people, however if like me you listen to a lot of bass driven music then you'll be over the moon. The top end and mid range are not quite so impressive and when listening to classical piano pieces the speakers limitations start to show through. Don't get me wrong, the sound quality is fantastic for the price, but if your a real audiophile and you listen mainly to classical music then fork out for the Bose Companions. The only real fault I could find was the remote volume controll is on a wire, so is not truly remote, and the volume controll is a little tempremental (in some positions mine looses one of the channels). But given the price and the quality of sound I can live with this.
