After having a cheap Creative 5.1 sound system for a few years I decided to replace it with a better system. I did some research and most places pointed to this being the best 5.1 set up for a PC that was available. I found a good deal and bought it straight away. I was not disappointed when it arrived and I had it set up.
The 4 satelite speakers both look and sound great. The removable grill gives them the standard speaker look but once it's remove they have a gorgeous modern chrome look. The sound quality is very clear from the high quality 3" drivers. They have 62W output power which gives them quite a bit of power to really pump out high quality sound. The speaker stand can rotate to turn it into a wall mount which is quite stylish and nice feature. The speaker cables are seperate to the speakers and amplifier allowing you to use your own speaker cable if you need to and not have any problems extending or replacing them in case of damage. The provided lengths are enough for a medium sized room.
The centre speaker is similar to the satelites but is horizontal and has 69W of power to allow speech to be better heard in 5.1 movies.
Now onto the subwoofer. The subwoofer speaker is a very large 10" and the unit itself is 12"x12"x19" which makes it very large and very heavy. All reviews will tell you that it's large but you don't realise how large it really is until you see it. Its size can make it hard to place in some rooms combined with its electromagnetic field requiring it to be placed 2 feet away from other devices to avoid damage to them. The bass from the device is incredible - loud and powerful. The subwoofer can occasionally make clicking noises caused by switches around the house which isn't too annoying really.
The control centre is also larger that it seems from the pictures as well. It looks quite nice and the interface is easy to use with a large knob on the front and a few buttons. The LCD is bright blue but the contrast is pretty good making it easy to read in the dark. However the LCD doesn't dim which can make it annoying. All devices connect to the speaker system through the control centre. On the back it has 3 jack inputs to allow either 3 stereo inputs or 1 5.1 input from a PC. It also has 1 coax digital input and 1 optical input. On the side is the headphone output and line in for mp3 players.
The control centre supports dolby digital, DTS and dolby pro logic. Dolby digital and DTS are used for DVD movies and consoles like the Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3 to provide true 5.1 sound. Dolby pro logic is used to get surround sound from 2 channels by either upmixing from a stereo source or using the matrixing information provided by devices like the Gamecube, Wii and PS2.
The remote is small and easy to use. It allows access to all the features of the device remotely which is much more convenient. The range is good and easily works across a large room. I use the remote much more than I use the input on the control panel as I don't need to move to it.
The sound quality from this system is truly amazing and really needs to be heard to be believed. It easily rivals more expensive home theatre systems in quality and power. When you listen you'll think you're listening to a much more expensive system. The power of this system is very high at 505W which gives up to 115dB of audio output. This is louder than a jack hammer and can cause hearing damage. A jet at 100m has a volume of 110 - 140dB. When playing at high volume it will also cause things to vibrate quite a bit - be careful not to let pictures fall off walls (really). The volume scale on the device goes from 1 - 20 and then above that into boost mode from 1 - 11. I usually have the device on 4 out of 20 unless it's very quiet but I never usually go up above 8.
Summary: This is a great sound system which I can't recommend enough. The only problem is positioning the subwoofer 2 feet away from other devices.
Advantages: Very loud, very good quality, easy to set up Disadvantages: Big and heavy subwoofer but that's to be expected!
...I eventually came across the Logitech Z-5500 - and I'm glad that I did. ~ The Setup I Have Now Got ~ When I found these speakers I originally thought that they would not be suitable due to the fact that on the box it says they are to be used mainly for PC's - but this was printed long before the PS3 came about, apparently. Now my set up is: Logitech Z-5500 ---> (optical cable) PS3 ---> (HDMI cable) HDTV This means that I can play my games and watch ... ...one source of entertainment. This Logitech on the other hand allows you to use them with many more sources including PC's, mp3 players, DVD players and game consoles. I hope many people will find this review helpful as I know how hard it is to find reliable information on these sort's of things. All of the information above is what I experienced first hand with little knowledge or advice and I can gladly report that this system worked out very well ...

Advantages: powerful, clear sound Disadvantages: display not always visible
I purchased this set of speakers after selling my set of Z5400, which was identical to this set, save for the digital control.
At 500W RMS, this speaker set will get things going. I have had mine for about a year, and only one did I ever turn the volume up past the three-quarter mark - and that was just a test!
Connected to a pc with a 5.1 channel output, this set really shines as a home theatre speaker system, with excellent sound quality, clarity ... ...or kick", according to a few of my friends.
One nice thing about this system was that there were no RCA or proprietry connectors from the amplifier located on the back of the subwoofer to the rest of the speakers - so if the supplied cord was not long enough, you could just head down to RadioShack and get as cable you needed. (Previous systems used RCAs to connect the satellites to the amp, so you would either have to cut the cord and do your own ...

Review of Logitech Z 5500
Advantages: The Sound clarity, design of speakers, price, ease of setup, Disadvantages: size of the Sub, Wired and not wireless satellites, AND NEIGHBOURS MAY COMPLAIN ABOUT LOUDNESS!
I've had these speakers for several months now. I purchased them from a local dealer who had an offer on and firstly I was amazed at the sheer size and weight of the box. Opening the packaging, it contained a remote control, batteries, the user manuals, 1 central speaker and 4 satallites, a centralised volume control system with nice blue neon lighting and lastly an absolutly gigantic Sub. Fitting was fairly easy, although i wished to originally ... ...use this on my PC because of the size of the sub not fitting anywhere downstairs also the wires would have looked unsightly and they were not long enough to go round the room, also the room structure meant that it would have been difficult placing the satallites in a good position in order to optimize the 5.1 surround sound. I connected the speakers easily and once the setup to my pc was complete I was at first instance blown away by the sound, I ...

Advantages: Loud, very good sound quality, snazzy design Disadvantages: Sub box is massive
I used to have a set of Creative 2.1 speakers that cost me £40. They did the job well, but i was after some extra punch and sound quality. After searching on the net for various options i chose these, and boy am i glad i am! The sound quality through these speakers is superb! With a total of 505W RMS they kick out alot more sound than the majority of units available! Mine were purchased 18 months ago for £300, but they are considerably cheaper these ... ...them.
The speakers look very nice on the desk, and produce some very good sounds. The subwoofer is an enormous 10" ported unit, which is impressive bearing in mind most PC speaker systems have a 5.25" or 6.5" sub. The only down side to this is the shear size of the sub box, its massive and you will struggle to fit it under most computer desks.
The 'control unit' is a very clever touch. It has a display screen and allows you to change the settings ...

Advantages: The price! Disadvantages: Hz range and watt output
.
But if you're looking for a quality system to give your movie and music experience a little "oomph", just pay the extra bucks and get a better system - like the Logitechz-5500 system.
I know, it was my mistake for rocking out while having an onboard sound card (woops), but it DID work just fine for a year - I'll give it that.
Setting up the system is very easy, but the wires from the speakers will be all over the floor, which isn't pretty. Even if you pin them to the wall, it still won't be pretty.
The speakers will stay put even if you put them on the armrest of your sofa, leaning them against the wall.
The wires are fairly long, I think they're about 12ft, which is good. I had to draw the wires behind and under the sofa, so take that into account on the length. If you have a big living room, the wires will be too short ...
Advantages: plug and play excellent sound improvement! Disadvantages: had a few initial problems with software (NOT DRIVERS)
I brought this soundcard before l got my surround sound system as it was one l had seen recommended online for the Logitechz5500 which is the system l intended to buy.
I paid about £35 for the card on ebay (new) which was excellent value.
TECH STUFF: the card is a simple plug and play device so even a computer virgin like me can sort it out you just whack it in and XP does the rest sorry can't comment on other OPS but l know most people have XP nowadays. The software l did have a few problrms on the install but l tried it again and there were no problems. Once l have the surround sound in place l could simply optimise the sound card for my set up by a useful range of sftware pieces which get you to point out improvements by clikcing where the sound is coming from in the room really easy to use and makes a big difference. There is ...
