It's not often you see a set of portable speakers that churn out such a good sound without having the word "Bose" written somewhere on them.

These however, although they're not going to cause much upset to the Bose share price, sound just great. Reading other people's reviews on here I can't seem to understand what their issue is with the sound quality. Sure, the bass is a bit "thuddy" when the volume is right up, but the overall clarity of the sound just can't be beaten for a set this cheap. I listen to all genres of music, and they all sound wonderful at all but the highest volume.

For portability these are fantastic. I bought them in Australia and took them backpacking around the world, they're very compact and light, and come in a nice protective zip up case. A pair of fold out feet keep them upright and allow them to be no more than an inch and a half thick when packed away. The battery life is amazing, and if you run out, simply plug them into the mains to charge them back up. There's no faffing around with heavy size Ds or charging units, just plug them straight in.

While plugged in, they can still play music, and will charge your iPod. When not plugged in, they sound exactly the same and you can take them into the bathroom while you have a shower or a poo. While backpacking, they've been great for sitting in the hostel garden, or on the beach (you can use the case to keep them out of the sun!)

There is a remote control which I find is the weakest link, perhaps mine is broken, it takes a bit of force to skip between tracks. It's small and light though, and has its own pocket in the carry case.

One other slight problem, and again it could be because mine is faulty, is how it controls the volume. It causes your iPod volume to go all the way up or all the way down when you just hit the volume on the speakers once. This can cause your iPod to stay "locked" to this volume until you plug it back into the speakers. It's only a problem if you don't notice it has done it, and you spend the day away from your speakers. Something to watch out for when you buy it, certainly.

It takes most iPods, coming with plastic adapters to allow more, and also has a 3.5mm jack in the back if you want to route sound from another MP3 player, or your laptop. No audio cables are included though.

The power LED is a great indicator, glowing blue for when you're running off the mains, flashing blue when it's charging, glowing purple when it is running on batteries and flashing red when there is a problem, such as a dubious taste in music.

All in all, it's solidly built, sounds great, and is extremely portable. The best toy a traveller can have.

Top review. I was fortunate enough to hook up with a traveller with one of these while in OZ, it worked out well as my car had no stereo and we could use both I-Pod and MP3 players.
