For years VCR's have lived in harmony with your TV and self , allowing us to stray from the daily monotony of TV programming , to escape within the plot of a good film or two . Not only that , video's make many a good bribe where kid's are concerned .

In latter years , the advent of DVD has occured , and is set to eventually take over as the prime accompaniment to the humble TV - that is when DVD-R is available at a reasonable price.

Initially prices for DVD's were to say the least astronomical , however as more units are sold , films are produced on the DVD format , so prices become lower , so low infact that it is quite easy for you to now pick up a budget DVD for as little as £69.00 .

With prices now reasonable just a few months ago , I decided the time was right to purchase a DVD as an accompaniment to the video and TV . I eventually plumped for the Logix 3300d model , which was included in a bundle package including 10 free DVD titles , at an unbelievable cost of £99 from Tesco's Extra.

~0~ The pro's of DVD : ~0~

1) Superb quality sound and vision
2) Can also double as a CD player
3) Movies more than often include extra footage / features
4) Depending on model purchased , DVD's offer choices of things such as viewing angle , scene selection etc.

~0~ The con's of DVD ~0~

1) Standard models do not offer recording facilities
2) Often region specific thus unable to play any old DVD
3) Will not allow for video backup ( copying ) due to a thing called macrovision.
4) DVD titles are on average £3-4 dearer than their video counterpart ( yet are cheaper / quicker to reproduce ) .
5) Older video titles are not available on DVD format.

~0~ The Logix 3300d DVD ~0~

1) Appearance :

Slender silver lean machine , with centrally located loading tray , underneath which you find the display window , and above which you find a large red LED which is illuminated when in use and gives the machine that UFO appearance.( The item displaye dby Ciao is not the Logix 3300d )
Front panel manual buttons allow for : on/off ; tray open/close ; stop button ; playback/ pause ; chapter/track skip button.
On the rear you find the output connectors , which on this model are : S-video out ; analogue audio/video out ; digital audion out ; Scart audio/video out .

In use , unless your TV has s-video input , or your VCR has twin scart sockets , then this DVD ( as many do ) , requires direct connection to your TV via a scart socket .

2) The remote control :

A comprehensive colour matching unit than sadly is found to be very flimsy with poor fitting battery cover ( a thing common to almost every remote out there - just think , how many remotes in your household have no battery cover ! ) .
It however feels tacky and at certain angles is not recognised by the DVD unit .
Sadly you need the remote to access the main features of the DVD , such as zoom , mute , setup etc.

3) Advanced controls / features (DVD ) :

Fast forward/reverse speeds of 2* , 4* , 8* , 16* , 32* , 64*

Slow motion replay for/rev of , 0.5* , 0.25* , 0.125* , single frame

Chapter / track/ frame start postion .

Chapter repeat / title repeat / repeat off / specified selection repeat function

Language selection ( where present ) / subtitles on/off

Zoom : 1.5* , 2* , 4*, off

Angle : ( available where DVD disks have allowed this ) .

Book marking ( go back to a DVD from where it was last left )

3D surround sound effects ( requires stereo tv or audio )

Mute at source

CD / MPEG 3 / VDV / DVD compliant / acceptable.

~0~ Setting up etc. ~0~

Very simple 10 minute thing , made easier by the easy to read and comprehend manual .

The DVD comes with the standard 1 year guarantee , and is made by LG . For those who do encounter problems ( my daughter did with her LG model DVD ) , the helpline number supplied , connects you with the LG service centre ( national call rates ) , and their service / advice was found to be second to none ( solved her problem in a few minutes ) .

This DVD is set to region 2 ( Europe ) . It can however be set to any of the other regions or even multi-regional by following the following instructions :

1) Turn on DVd and open tray.
2) Press <setup> on your remote and goto the Setup menu
3) Highlight Custom ( last option )
4) Type 3333 which brings up a secret menu
5) Press <enter> then use arrow keys on remote to highlight your regional code choice ( 0 = multi region )
6) Press <enter> ( to confirm )
7) Press SETUP

~0~ In Use ~0~

While not all functions have been used or are required , the DVD has played impecably for the last two months , and the unit is very quiet in operation , and is an ideal first purchase .
Okay , it hasn't all the facilities of the top of the range models , but lets be honest would most of us use them anyway ?
Well recommended .

Advantages: Good package, good features, decent price
Disadvantages: None

I have only recently got around to getting a DVD player and I am glad I waited because the price and quality of machines now allows plenty of choice. [Availability and Price] This DVD player is available from a number of sources. I got mine from Watford Electronics for about £140 with 10 DVDs. Tescos have it for £150 with 10 DVDs. Other email ads have turned up at Watford’s price. [Support] There is a helpline charged at standard national rate. ...
...[Installation] Dead easy. I left the machine for a couple of hours in case it had got cold during transportation – avoiding condensation, you see. Connected it to the TV with the supplied SCART cable and turned the power on. The only setting I changed was the secret menu to set it up as multi region rather than region 2. (DVD disks can be branded for use in a particular region of the world. We are in region 2 and I think USA is region 1. If your ... Read review

Logix 3300D DVD player not very good
Review of Logix DVD-3300D by ace_ace_qwerty

Advantages: Remotely change it to region-free
Disadvantages: Picture freezing / locking up frequently with DVD-R & DVD-RW discs, no FF buttons on the front of the player

My Logix 3300D doesn't look like the one in the photograph from the link, but there you go. (Mine is also silver). Originally this was proclaimed to be an all-singing unit but I've found to my costs that this is NOT true. I was told it played SVCD discs. It does, in a fashion, as it plays them so judderily and badly that this is just not practical to do so. To be fair, the literature that comes with the unit DOES NOT say that it will play SVCDs, ...
...If you burn your own DVDs don't buy this DVD player - it just isn't up to it because the picture either pixelates or freezes far too regularly. Sometimes the unit freezes so badly that the only way to get the disc out is by powering off at the front and switching on again and then pressing eject. After inserting a DVD-RW disc into the unit, it takes about 20 seconds to even just see that the discs inserted is of this type! (DVD-R discs are alot ... Read review

Great player, bad service
Review of Logix DVD-3300D by NinaE

Advantages: Good price, nice look, good functionality
Disadvantages: logix customer service

...of the story, get the player as its great but never attempt to do any firmware upgrades as Logix are not a very professional company when it comes to that, unless you want to end up buying an all in one remote like me, to get your stop button back. ... Read review

DVD 3300D problems playing some DVDs
Review of Logix DVD-3300D by Beverlonian

Advantages: Plays DVD MP3 and CD CD-R/RW Any Region.
Disadvantages: Plays some DVD's others are juddery.

When I purchased the 3300D it came bundled with 50 DVDs. These are compilations, 2 to a disc and up to 4 in a case. They are not top rate DVDs but they are eminently watchable. These all played very well and there were no signs of distortion or judder. On the back of this purchase, I bought six more DVDs including Gladiator and Star Wars II Attack of the Clones. None of these six DVDs would play on the 3300D. The output would initially be there ...
...It was totally unwatchable. I checked that the machine had not developed a fault by playing some of the 50 bundled DVDs and they played fine. On the positive side, when the bundled DVDs were played as well as the MP3s that I have burned myself onto CD-Rs everything was fine. It would not play MP3s recorded on CD-RWs. Ordinary CDs played perfectly. The sound quality was fine. The remote control is perfectly adequate and compact and it can be used ... Read review

Proper review
Review of Logix DVD-3300D by cornz

Advantages: cheap, cheerful and not as bad as some would have you believe
Disadvantages: only very basic controls on player

Its silver, basic on front but functional. Has a nice bright display. Plays beermats...Well, by that i mean it will play almost everything i have thrown at at provided the disks conform to standards. But i can say it doesnt like cheap dvd media. I backed up some of my dvd-5 films and played em back. On several media the player just wouldnt entertain em while others (discplanet)work perfectly. Multiregion is easy to do and despite other people reporting ...
...then perhaps they should disconnect the lg 3300d from their VHS recorder!!!! Macrovision is not on every DVD you will use. It has plenty of features and set up options, such as aspect ratio, parental controls, 5.1 dts, the usual stuff you expect on a budget dvd player. Here are some media results. MP3 on dvd-r No! MP3 on CD-RW No! MP3 on CD-R Yes! No long file name support but more than adequate. Folks, its a dvd player, the fact it does mp3's ... Read review
