I discovered this great novel last Summer. I am a Librarian and it was one of the new books that I brougth for the Library and, sincerelly, I think it is one of the best that I have brought and read. I am " falling in love" with London, I don't know why it is a city so special for me and I love to read about it. Maybe, this is one of the reassons by what I liked, and I like, this novel. It tells London's History from Celtic ages until 1997; accross their pages you are going to learn more about this city, and also about England. I am also an Historician and when I read a Historic novel, I do it with a few of afraid because, sometimes, there are a lot of Historic mistakes. With "London" not. When you are reading it, you see that it has a big documentary work and that the writer knows, perfectly, about it is talking. When I am reading a book, I like pick notes and with " London" I have picked a lot of them. I have 2 notebooks full of dates and Historical acts. It has around 1.500 pages, but for me they are few. I couldn't left to read "London". It is a novel that to hook: It has an interesting character and plot. "London" has a style similar to Ken Follet's novel " The Pillards of the Earth"- I don't know if it is the correct English title-, accross a family it are going to telling the History of a city of an Age. I think this style or way is so good and interesting, specially because there are a standar language. There isn't a special language and that make all the people can read the novel without a problemm. Sometimes, you read books with a language so specialist that can make that his reading be a few hard to the people that aren't specialist in this area. "London" is a novel that all the people can read whitout a problem, his langage make interesting his reading, because there is a subplot. I like it because I am Historician and I like read Historic novel, but this novel has been reading by people that aren't Historician, also people that don't like more History, and they are so happy with it. In my Library, this is one of the novels that people more read and like. Because of all, I love this novel and I want to read "Sarum" and "Russian", I am sure I am going to ennjoy reading them. But " London" is special, thanks to this book when I come back to London this Summer, I am going to see the city with a different eyes, and I am sure I am going to feel more his History in every corner. If you love London, and you are interesting in History, you have to read this novel,I am sure you are going to enjoy while you are reading it, you will want it was more big. In one word: one of the best novel of this last Century.
Advantages: Easy reading, full of facts and amusing details Disadvantages: size of the book, 1500 pages !!
I have lived in London for 2 1/2 years and picked up this book as I was somehow interested to find more about the city. I had taken the open tour bus a couple of time to entertain some visiting friend and family and was amazed of the gabble and funny historical details the guides had to tell. ~The Book~

Advantages: English history in a fast paced novel Disadvantages: Relationships between generations can get confusing
...you live or work in London then this book will make you look around again and realise how much history there is in our capital. If my history lessons at school had been as interesting as Mr Rutherfurd has made it in this book then I might have studied it further.
The story, as the title suggests, focuses on the history of London over the last 2000 years starting in pre-Roman times through to 1997. It follows the ancestral lines of a number of different ... ...& fall of London over time, through invasions, plagues, revolutions & murder. The fascination for me was seeing the names of people and places that you walk along evolving through history. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Thomas Beckett, Henry VIII are all characters in the story mingling with the fictional families.
There are a number of maps and a BIG family tree at the front of the book which you need to refer to if you don't want to get too lost. I have ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "London - Edward Rutherford"
Advantages: excellent character development, historical accuracy Disadvantages: sometimes distracted from thread of story by 'history lessons'
If you ask a typical school student they will usually tell you that their most boring subject is history, so full of dates and musty, irrelevant seeming facts that it is hard to keep your eyes open. Well, EdwardRutherford in his daring and epic novel series beginning with the international best seller 'Sarum' has challenged this view of history (with one of those glove slap across the face gestures I am sure) and beaten it in a bloody duel.
'The Forest' is EdwardRutherford's fourth novel and shares many of the conventions of his last three (Sarum, Russka and London) - following the lives of a small group of families interconnected through generations ('The Forest' beginning in 1099 and stretching to April 2000) and centred in the same small area of land which is both shaped by them and shapes them.
Despite being a work ...
Advantages: An easy way to get a broad idea of Russia in an entertaining way. Disadvantages: A very large book which can take a while to get through
I've been a fan of EdwardRutherford since I discovered "Sarum". Having also read his book "London" I was very keen to sample "Russka", and I was not disappointed.
Russka chronicles the history of Russia from the pre Christian settlers through to the post Communist early 1990's. As with all Rutherford's books the reader is taken on a chronological history as they follow the lives of a number of key families through the generations.
I was a little wary of Russka before I started the book. I was unsure whether I would be sufficiently interested in the history of the country, and whether I could cope with all the Russian names, to keep ploughing on for over 700 pages of fiction. However, my doubts were dispelled very quickly.
I found the book to be very well written and the stories certainly held my attention. I was especially ...
