Being the UK's second largest airport, London Gatwick has the job of catering for the overflow from Heathrow and does it very well indeed. This is an outline of what Gatwick offers.

LOCATION/ACCESSIBILITY
The name London Gatwick is slightly misleading because it is not in London at all. It is in Crawley, West Sussex and just on the border of Surrey. The Gatwick Express train is a mere 30 minutes trip from London Victoria and there are also connections to the airport from destinations such as Brighton, Southampton and Bristol. Gatwick is off the M23 which connects to the M25 and is normally Ok for traffic. Parking is not too bad and is easy to get the monorail over to either terminal

ACCOMODATION
Gatwick, like most airports, provides accomodation just outside the main terminals, North and South. There is a range and the most popular is the Holiday Inn. The Ramada is also popular. If you do not fancy staying so close, take a 3 miute train trip to Crawley or Horley and you will find an extra choice there. Most are either 3 or 4 star hotels and the prices reflect this.

AMENITIES
Gatwick offers the normal range of shops and eateries. The most opoular is still Mcdonalds but there are fish places and nice pub lunches. Not advisable to have too many pints before a long journey but nice relaxation if there is a long delay. WH Smiths and the excellent Waterstones (airside) are the places to pick up your reading material for the trip. And, of course, take advantage of the Duty Free

ROUTES
British Airways run many of their routes from Gatwick and, altough a few to South America have recently been taken away, there is a good choice to Europe, Africa and USA. Most of the major airlines have routes to and from Gatwick and it is an excellent airport for charter flights to those Mediterranean destinations

CONCLUSION
Gatwick is a very popular airport and offers an alternative to the intensity of Heathrow where it is easy to get lost with the sheer volume of business. Good choice of routes, good facilities, accessibility and also provides many jobs for the local community
