I'm not sure when the other reviews of this book were written but this review is of the November 2005 Edition.
If you are considering a trip to Oz this guide will prove invaluable in helping you to get the best out of your experience. Those of you who are familiar with Lonely Planet publications will know that they produce the best travel guide books available.
All the research for the book is done by independent travellers who basically 'tell it like it is'. This edition contains a 16 page colour road map section which I found really useful for getting your bearings. If you are travelling to Oz alone, as I did, you'll find the book provides piece of mind. You know where you going to stay in the next town/city your heading for etc. and where the backpacker hotspots are.
However, the book is much more than just a list of places to stay and things to do, it tries to give the reader a taste of the culture. When you first arrive in Sydney it's hard to decide what to do first and can be a bit overwhelming! The book gives suggestions of itineraries based on your time-scale so you don't miss out on the big things. Its also good to read during all those hours you spend flying and on coaches etc.
It covers virtually everything you could possibly need to know about each territory individually from environmental information to working there. There are also lots of great glossy pictures of the scenery etc.
Overall, for £11.50 (Amazon) this book is money well spent!
