I bought 'Long Road to Freedom'oh it must be more than three ago years now. The will was there, but with two children, now aged 3 and 6 years old, I just never seemed to have the time. This summer I finally took the plastic wrapping off and vowed to 'make the time' to read it. I started ... Read review

Freedom. A good deal of this autobiography was written secretly while Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island by South Africa's apartheid regime. Among the book's interesting revelations is Mandela's ambivalence toward his lifetime of devotion to public works. It cost him two marriages and kept him distant from a family life he might otherwise have cherished. Long Walk to Freedom also discloses a strong and generous spirit that refused to be broken under the most trying circumstances--a spirit in which just about everybody can find something to admire. --Amazon.com

Freedom" recreates the drama of the experiences that helped shape Nelson Mandela's destiny. From his beginning in the Transkei to his being taken to Robben Island this is the story of how a man rose so far only to be sentenced to life imprisonment. Emotive and compelling it is the story of an epic life.
international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality."Long Walk to Freedom" is his moving autobiography Here Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life - an epic of struggle setback renewed hope and ultimate triumph which has until now been virtually unknown to most of the world. The foster son of a Thembu chief Mandela was raised in the traditional tribal culture of his ancestors but at an early age learned the modern inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In engrossing prose he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg of his slow political awakening and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family the anguished breakup of his first marriage and the painful separations from his children. He also brings to life the escalating political warfare in the 1950s between the ANC and the government culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964 at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He recounts the surprisingly eventful 27 years in prison and the complex delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the inside account of the unforgettable events since his release that produced at last a free multiracial democracy in South Africa.

...dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.' This book has reminded / motivated me to not give up. Although from time to time I might take a rest from live's trials and tribulations, that rest should only be to re-energise. If I am truely motivated to a cause I shouls return to participate in the struggle, and hopefully, particularly with the dignity that Nelson Mandela showed throughout his 30 or so years in prison. ...

...and despite it being relatively long (approximately 751 pages, Abacus) I was gripped from beginning to end and finished it within two days. I began reading this book on recommendation of a friend and decided to get stuck into and that I did. The story stayed with me from start to finish and I found some of the most memorable quotes that I can ever think of in such a powerful and compelling life story of a man who can only be called a hero in the ... ...that they struggled with the Afrikaans and the African names but having spent a lot of time in Africa names for me were not a problem and the native languages of Zulu, Bemba and Afrikaans were not unusual to me, so the novel and its words flowed naturally. Despite what others have said the names that are there are there to make you realise the culture Nelson Mandela comes from, something he is not ashamed off and something that he did not ever forget. ...

A Compelling Story Review ofLong Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandelaby
ICATJAM
Advantages: Informative Disadvantages: Inexperienced readers may find it long and linguistically difficult
At last I found the quality time in my life to read the story of this living legend. The story of just a man but a man with the strongest convictions of any man in history. A man who lived through his imprisonment to see his dream begin. I say begin because as we know there are still many injustices in his country which are not yet ironed out. Mnay things have been said in previous reveiws and I shall not attempt to repeat them. i only say that this ...
