Alan Carr is not someone who I was very familiar with until recently. He came to my attention when I watch by chance his Celebrity Ding Dong show. I can honestly say that I don't think I had laughed so much at a single show in a very long time. After I told my hubby about him he though he would treat me to his new book when he spotted it in the shops.
The book is a hard back edition white has a picture of Alan smiling and a white back ground. The dust cover of the book has a picture of a small body of a weight lifting man and lots of funny things behind it. The face of Alan which we see is actually the one on the cover of the book as there is a cut out hole in it.
The book has 12 chapters which all have titles with a football theme. Alan starts the book talking about his childhood and how his father had been a professional footballer and was trying to push him to follow in his footsteps. Alan was never any good at sports let alone football and suffered great humiliation at the hands of fellow school children.
Throughout his childhood he was bullied at school as he says he was a funny looking thing which wore big glasses and had big buck teeth so he understands how he was an easy target. He says as he grew up the bullies settled down and hardly took any notice of him as he minced around the school.
Alan tells about a big shock he had when he watched himself on the television in a drama class, he was surprised to see himself and how squeaky his voice really was. He decided he had to change and spent the next few years trying to butch himself up!
As we move through the book we hear of is time at University and how he finally gave up trying to change himself and finally accepted who he was and that he was gay. He talks about the first time he had to do a stand up gig as part of his course and how terrified it made him so he vowed he would never do this again. After University finished he became disillusioned as he thought his drama degree would mean he would get lots of work.
Alan spent a long time being disillusioned as he worked temporary jobs in factories and he decided he needed to make a big change in his life. After a travelling holiday with his close friend he came back and decided he would take up the comedy scene and so his long hard slog had started.
There are lots of chapters where Alan talks about how he found it hard trying to get work and how some gigs made him feel so bad he was about to give it all up. I found the parts when he talked about the Edinburgh festival very interesting as you would not believe the amount of work the acts have top do whilst they are there and the massive bills they have when it comes to an end.
Alan lived a very crazy life when he was staring out and he had some very crazy house friends which he does talk about with great humour. I did feel a sense of relief for him when I read he finally managed to buy his own house!
The book goes on to talk about the highs and lows he suffered throughout the start of his career and at times he was going to pack the whole job in but he finally got his big break and it only happened by chance as he had not actually been able to see the show but finally agreed to do it, luckily for him his all turned out well and he made a great start for his super career he now has in television.
I was not sure what I was going to think of this book when I got it as a present but went into it with an open mind. I am so glad that I read it. From the start Alan had me hooked as he talks about his childhood with great humour and explains his feeling really well.
I was quite shocked to read all about the gigs and jobs which he had suffered before he finally made the big time as I just had no idea how hard it was to break into the world of comedy, then again as Alan says in the book he met people who had been going around doing gigs for over 10 years and still not had their big break so in one way he was quite lucky.
Alan does talk about being gay but not in a big way which may put some people off the book. He says that he never really had a point in his life he realised he was gay but he says he always kind of knew. He has the same troubles as anyone with partners, or lack of them in his case! I think he dealt with this side of his life with great honesty and really showed his emotions in the way he had written it, albeit some of the tales he tells are very funny.
Hubby did complain a few times when I read this book in bed as it did have me laughing out loud which is always a bonus when reading a book. I feel from the way he talks about his life and what he is like when he performs on stage this is all one man and he really doesn't have to act on stage, he just tells about real thing which have actually happened to him.
Alan ended the book just at the start of his television career which did disappoint me slightly as I would have liked to have read about how he found it but then this does leave him open to writing another one in a few years time.
The book does have four sections which contain photos of Alan through out his life and these are really useful as some of them relate to stories which Alan talks about. I will agree with Alan when he says that he was a very strange looking child!
The book was published by Harper Collins Limited and is available of between £9-£10 from Tesco and may also be available for less on Amazon.
Please do not think I have given the entire book away with this review as what I have written about only scratches the surface of the information and stories which Alan has written about.
I do recommend this book for all fans of Alan as it is a very open, honest and funny account of a budding comedians life.
Advantages: Interesting story, easy to read Disadvantages: None for me
It's been a relatively short space of time since Alan Carr first became prominent on our TV screens on Channel 4's The Friday Night Project, which he first hosted on the 6th January 2006 with co host Justin Lee Collins. The series itself had enjoyed an eight week run the previous year hosted by Jimmy Carr (no relation to Alan just a spooky coincidence) but for the second series Channel 4 wanted new presenters and amongst those chosen was Alan Carr. ... ...point you could quite smugly say "and the rest is history..." "Look Who it is!" published at the latter end of 2008, just in time for a Christmas stocking filler is Alan Carr's autobiography. I often scorn at all of these "new" celebrities rushing out their autobiographies, often barely before their pubescent acne has cleared up. Whilst on the other hand I hold great respect for those more established "stars" like Michael Parkinson or Dawn French ...

Advantages: Great front cover, hysterically funny Disadvantages: Some parts seemed a little too rushed
''Alan is the spiritual son of Frankie Howerd''. (Quote from City Life) I think that says it all….
With big thanks to my boyfriends sister I am now the very proud owner of Alan Carr's 'Look who it is' book. It is immediately going to be added to my vast collection of autobiographies and I shall make certain that it gets the hot spot where the morning sun can warm its fringe, it deserves a shrine! I am not exaggerating when I say it is the most hysterically ... ...Initially I thought Peter Kay's was amusing but this beats it by a mile. The front cover is an instant attraction. Alan has portrayed himself to be at a seaside resort and he has been photographed with his face on a little man with huge muscles lifting weights. Is he trying to convince us that he has little muscles but just hides them away, no! If you flap open the front cover you will see the real Alan underneath in all his glory, the chubby chap ...

This review is for the hardback version of 'Look Who It Is! My Story:' by Alan Carr
Alan Carr has long been on my radar as a great comic presenter and comedian. As one half of the presenting dynamo for 'The Friday/Sunday Night Project', Alan has long been using making me laugh with camp humour, innuendo and cutting sarcasm. With expectations high I delved into his autobiography….
His TV persona always seems deeply rooted in reality despite his ... ...told how he can't quite believe what his life is like at the moment now he's in the public eye. I've heard this from many a 'celebrity' before but there is something more genuine here; Alan understands what has made him famous and is grateful for it without over-the-top gushing.
The first couple of chapters deal with his childhood, from being born in Weymouth and moving all across the country as his father's work dictated. Alan's dad, Graham Carr, ...

Advantages: Laugh out loud funny Disadvantages: Has a premature end to the book
When I received this book for Christmas, i was really happy. I had seen Alan Carr on Friday/Sunday night project and thought he was quite funny. Then when his stand up show The Tooth Fairy was on channel 4, I loved it, it was hilarious and I found myself sitting laughing out loud (my dog got a bit frieked out at my outbursts). I had been thinking of getting the book, but thought I'd wait till after Christmas in the hope of picking up a copy cheaply. ... ...of Alan Carr, his ups and downs of being the son of a well known footballer and football manager, being expected to follow in his fathers footsteps. The book has 300 pages and has two sections of colour pictures. This is the hardback copy and is available on amazon at 9.49. My Opinion - Alan ...
