Daytime TV is an interesting thing really; you get to watch programs like Diagnosis Murder, A Touch of Frost and then Countdown. Lunchtime was usually the time of Neighbours on BBC1, but even that's moved to Five and besides I haven't watched it for so long that most of the cast are complete unknowns to me anyway! So looking for something to watch after This Morning had finished, I found Loose Women, a program that is broadcast from 12:30 to 1:30 daily that has four women sitting down at a Desk on stalls and talking about things, sometimes themselves mainly. Add a few guests into the mix who also come on to talk about themselves as well as a premium rate text or phone in competition of the "£1 per minute" variety and you have the perfect recipe for 60 minutes worth of daytime programming. Tht is basically the whole show in a nutshell, simple set up and also not too badly executed as well.
The panel are made up of four women, Andrea McLean, former weathergirl and reporter on GMTV, vocal trainer and TV judge Zoe Tyler, Coronation Street actress Sherrie Hewson and singer Jane McDonald. On the whole they fire off each other well and have a vast experience
of life between them, as the discussions held usually involve life experiences of at least two of them to which their thoughts and feelings are explained, sometimes in quite some depth which if left can change the atmosphere in the studio from bouncy to downright sad. A good example of this was today's show where Sherrie Hewson was discussing the fact that she didn't really trust men anymore due to recent experiences she has had, this changed the whole premise and the other three gave her support and advice for what she went through and how to move on. This was actually quite unexpected and moving as you felt for the person and was given an idea as to the pain that they had undergone.
I am never sure as to how much this show is actually scripted, I can only take a stab in the dark to say that the subjects are headed up before the show starts and are opened up to discussion. Therefore you get four opinions and various agreements or disagreements in some cases. But as a man its interesting to hear some of these stories, to be honest it's the same kind of talk that a group of men will say down the pub, but on a purely different subject. For example in the program topical subjects will be discussed where as down the pub it will be Football or something like that. It's also funny to watch some of the panel attempt to out do another panellist with their stories that are bigger and far more interesting than the previous story we heard on the subject, of course this also gives us an insight into the people on the panel as well and can be totally two way between the group that we see on screen.
One thing that has to be said is that the four main presenters do look really good in the way they appear on screen. Not only do they look stylish, but the way in which they dress and the hairstyles they wear really does do them justice without crossing the "lamb dressed as mutton" line at all and they do genuinely look attractive and sexy. Guess this part of it really, my opinion is that if you don't have the right type of bait, you ain't gonna get a bite!! This for me was the most noticeable fact about the basic simplicity of the show itself, if the four women weren't as smart as this then I don't think the show would have been successful as the characters of the panel is what the show is about in the first place.
By the way men are usually the main topic on here and in the shots of the audience the male species are very few and far between. In fact it's just like a Tom Jones concert!! Although most of the guests are women there have been a number of male guests from time to time, when they do appear they do look very cautious when walking on the set after being announced and do act in a reserved manner at the start, but by the end do tend to relax, basically who can blame them! Unless you're a bullet proof film star who oozes sex appeal in the manner of George Clooney which in turn will have women just dribbling when he appears on the show, then at the end of the day I think it's only right that the male guests would be a little nervous. Past presenters in the group have included Carol McGiffin, Jackie Brambles and the 'Queen of Chavs' Kerry Katona. In fact the last one just used to think she was above anyone else and attempted to become the Alpha Female of the group as she used to wind everyone up the wrong way. The presenter at the time Kaye Adams always used to retaliate with a cutting remark that made the audience laugh, making Katona look the loud mouthed clown that she is. In fact I hope that she may have been the subjects of some of the discussions held, now that would be catty! Besides I believe she got fired in the end as well as her comments showed what type of Mother she would be, and as well as receiving a number of complaints from viewers about attitude, she was also damaging the image of the program.
The program itself has been running for seven years now and has a good solid audience base, most recently the program made headlines on both TV and Newspapers as the main guest swore, only trouble is the program is broadcast live and the opportunity to bleep out the swear words couldn't be taken. Guest Joan Rivers who had made a strong comment when referring to actor Russell Crowe was asked to leave whilst the advertisements were running. Although apologies were made at the time, I do suspect that this was a promotion stunt on the part of Rivers herself, as she was on the show to promote her new stage show and basically I felt that this was just too much of a coincidence. Naturally from this both shows got good press coverage, the issues as to whether this is a good thing is open to debate itself.
Overall this passes an hour of time. Maybe not a program that really aimed at men to watch, but mainly for women as the topical banter and the premise is who this is really aimed at. Typically this is a bit of a risk having this program on so early in the day as I could easily see this being a post-watershed broadcast, then I think it would be a proper women only program and one that would easily become a lot racier in nature. Also why can't blokes have a program like this, okay we have Top Gear to ourselves, but I don't think Loose Men would really be appropriate as a title after all would that refer to the fact in this case that the male presenters may have gone Commando?

I used to like this show, but then they started talking about really stupid subjects like 'do you prefer plastic or terracote plant pots, lets discuss for the next hour' :(

Daytime tv is enoughth to send anyone back to work
Advantages: Effective decimation of unnecessary brain cells Disadvantages: By watching it, you're directly contributing to Jeremy Kyle's smugness fund.
