Advantages Advantages Great characters and story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Helps to be familiar with the series

You may not know this, but the world actually is flat. This is Discworld, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld to be precise. The Disc, as it is more commonly referred to, is in fact supported by four giant elephants (Berilia, Tubul, Great T’phon and Jerakeen) which stand on the back of the star turtle, the Great A’Tuin. The seas endlessly flow into space at the rim and at its hub stands Cori Celesti, a ten miles high spire, on top of which the Disc’s assorted deities reside. The Discworld exists on the edge of reality and is entirely held together by its strong magical field ... more

    Advantages Advantages very funny

Disadvantages Disadvantages its a long way down the line in a long series, and it doesn't stand alone too well.

Fairys are cute little people who grant wishes, Right? They're pretty princesses, yes? They sneak in during the night and wash you dishes, don't they? Don't they? Well actually no. If you go back to the older myths and traditions, as the excellent Mr Pratchett has clearly done, you get a very different kind of tale. Traditionally speaking, faeries are self iterested, they do what pleases them. Some of them (the Seelie) are generally benevolent, some, (The unseelie) like to harm people for their entertainment. one thing they are not renowned for is being 'cute'. Somewhere in the hills of Lancre ... more

Advantages Advantages Well written and brilliantly funny

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Lords and Ladies is another classic from the pen of Terry Pratchett. It involves the three favourite daughters of Lancre, Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax and Magrat, all of whom are witches. Magrat however is about to switch jobs, going from a witch to being Queen of Lancre. Seeing that the witches are being weakened by the loss of Magrat the Elves make a play to break the bonds that have been placed on them in previous years in the form of the Dancers (rocks containing thunderbolt iron) that I can only compare to something like Stonehenge. Using her power the Lady reaches out beyond the Dancers ... more

Advantages Advantages Witches, a nympho dwarf and a cracking storyline

Disadvantages Disadvantages Possibly need to read Witches Abroad first

This is the information about the author from Pratchetts book – Lords & Ladies: Terry Pratchett lives in Somerset and writes books. It seems to work – the last fifteen of them have all made it into the bestseller lists. He also grows carnivorous plants and thinks the world could use more orang-utans. That’s all the information I will be giving you about the author as I think it is fairly self-explaitory. The Book This is one of the few books he has written that is almost intended to be a sequel – usually one just follows on in an unrelated story with some familiar characters. This one is best ... more

    Advantages Advantages Funny and readable.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Need to know a bit of background for the story to work well.

This is Terry Pratchetts 14th Discworld novel; it is based on A Midsummer Nights Dream. The preface to the book gives all the details from the previous books that relate to this one, so having read other books in the series is not necessary but does add something to the understanding of the book in general. The books particularly relating to this one are, Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad (although there are other books featuring the witches, these are the books that they feature most heavily in). This book also introduces Agnes (the only one out of the would be witches with any ... more
