Although the Lotus SS (SmartSuite) package is appealing to the less computerly educated user, to the normal user, the services Lotus offer in the SS package just can't keep up with MS Office. The office suite although containing the same, lacks the cutting edge a business needs with an office package. Both the spreadsheet and the database lack the power and advancitivity that MS Access and MS Excel offer. Also the word processing package also needs a lot of inprovement if it is going to keep up with MS Word. The only up this has on MS Offiec is that interactivity between applications is better than that of MS Office. ...

I have both Lotus and Microsoft Office 2000 installed on my computer and use both, for different tasks. In my opinion there is very little difference for a home user between these 2 packages. Both offer a functional word processor, a spreadsheet and several other utilities, all with advanced features designed to make life easier.
In my experience, Lotus is just preferable because it is simpler to use and not over engineered as is the Microsoft suite. However you could say that the reason that it is preferable because it isn't advanced and doesn't quite have all of the same advanced and helping features of Office.

I actually use Lotus Smartsuite 97, but I used Millennium once, on my sister's PC, and it was hardly any different. The suite is made up of WordPro, a great word processor, 1-2-3, a spreadsheet, Organiser, Approach (a database), Screencam, a macro-maker, and lots of help tours which use video and aminations. The suite has all the features of MS Office 97, but the interface doesn't look as professional and isn't as clear and easy-to-use in my opinion. However, as Lotus is given away free with new PCs more often than Office (as it's far cheaper for the PC maufacturers to buy licenses for), it is a great integrated suite with all the features you could possibly need or want. ...
