Small and Loud
Review of Bose Acoustimass 10 by tony.shepherd

Advantages: size, sound
Disadvantages: cost

These are not cheap by any means but you get what you pay for. I did alot of research into buying a decent se of AV speakers, going out on numerous occasions to listen to diferent setups. I listened to dvd's in dd5.1 and also cd's, a fantastic cd track by the propellor heads was by far the best way of gauging how well the setups could handle music. The acoustimass stood out by a mile, it could handle anything that you through at it and ontop of ...
...of large box speakers. The satelites are about 3" sqaure and there are two to each of the five channels, also you get a dedicated sub box, about 24" by 16" by 7" which you can hide anywhere in the room, mine is under the coffee table. These did blow my budget of £500.00 out of the water, but I eventully raised the funds by another £300.00 to aquire them. I nearly forgot, they do come with their own supply of cable, plenty of it at that. ... Read review

Accoustimass 5 - small and superb
Review of Bose AM5 by a4angus

Advantages: Small; Great sound for size; Stylish design
Disadvantages: Pricey

I have had the BOSE Accoustimass 5 stereo system for quite a few years now. It is a testament to their quality that I have not needed to upgrade these. BOSE have released 2 further versions of this setup and there are specialised surround sound units for those who favour films before music. Why BOSE AM5? = Size was a significant issue in the decision - in my small flat of old, I had little room for floor speakers. After some research ...
...for the 5 speaker setup. What You Get A powerful base unit that powers each the 2 cube speaker modules. The 2 cube speakers are attached and pivot in the middle horizontally. The idea is that you can 'reflect' the sound from the various walls in the room to give a perfect sound distribution. There is a supply of average quality speaker wire to connect from the base module to the speakers and a power cable. The manual is excellent ... Read review

Better sound by marketing??
Review of Bose Acoustimass 10 III by NomisG

Advantages: Relatively easy to fit in the dustbin
Disadvantages: Everthing about it, starting with the price.

...a way typical of all Bose systems. There is a charateristic Bose sound which bears no relation to Hi-Fi whatsoever. It can be characterised as a bloated, flatulent bass which overpowers a weak veiled midrange all topped off with a screeching, strident top end. The design of the system goes against everything that quality manufacturers know to be essential get speakers to sound natural or even 'right'. When I sold Hi-Fi and people would ask about ...
...for Bloody 'Orible Sounding Electronics! Bose charges serious money for these systems, especially when you add one of their awful media players, and they really are not worth a tenth of the asking price. If you are considering buying Bose, do yourself a huge favour - go listen to the truely great Tannoy Arena system. It looks fabulous, sounds even better and its not made of tacky plastic. ... JBL On Tour fails to deliver the goods.
Review of JBL On Tour by Baneat

Advantages: It plays music
Disadvantages: It has a massive range of serious flaws in design.

The JBL on tour speakers are average, at the most. For their high cost, you wouldn't expect some of the severe design flaws present in it. The audio quality is relatively good considering it's size, and the maximum volume is very high, albeit containing sizable amounts of distortion on the higher volume settings. Of the desing flaws, there are many. Some are: Not including a "turn off/on" option, instead giving the user some not-so-obvious ways ...
...impossible to actually close the JBL On Tour speakers because the end of the cable is deliberately in the way of the shutting mechanism, which is also a not so obvious way of turning the thing off. If I wanted to turn something off for later use, closing the lid over without officially switching the thing off would make me assume that the speakers are still on. I do not recommend these speakers. Especially considering how much they cost. I do recommend ... Read review
