Review of "Love, Honour And Obey (DVD)"
Love Honour and Obey is a funny film. It’s good old fashioned British humour with a healthy dose of gangster violence and Denise Van Outen injecting some very saucy sex scenes and mucky talk. I liked Lock Stock and also the Tarantino movies so this probably sets the scene for you about my taste. You may also notice I’ve op’d on Sexy beast so by now you know I am a big Ray Winstone fan. So that’s the scene set let me tell you about the movie….. The story is narrated by one of the central characters in a clown outfit. The narration works a treat because it is the scripted bit of the film, most of the scenes are unscripted. Like me you will spend most of the movie wondering why the narrator is dressed in a clown suit. I am not going to spoil the ending, but it’s enough to say it becomes clear at the end of the film. The story is all about the glamorous attraction low level gangster life holds for a young man called Jonny. Jonny is a postman who realises he is in a dead end job. However since school his best friend is Jude (Jude Law). Jude is Ray’s (Ray Winstone) nephew and he works in the family firm doing everything from slot machine rackets to porn shops. Jonny persuades Jude to introduce him to Ray and after much persuasion Jude agrees. Jonny suggests a credit card scam using his position as a postman to steal cards. Now remember all this is going on with various sub plots behind including one of the gangs erectile dysfunction since being caught by his wife having a “jodrell” over the sink (it’s rhyming slang, work it out). Kathy Burke plays the long suffering wife who just wants a baby and various hilarious scenes follow this subplot including a strap on penis and a blow up doll which gets a puncture!I hope this gives you a flavour of the type of humour in the film. Only watching it will do it justice and I don’t want to spoil it. When the North London gang have to go to speak to the South London gang over territories for slot machines, the hilarious violence and humiliation inflicted on the two Northern members is laughing outloud spectacular.
The raid on a diamond merchant with Ray and the gang dressed as Arabs is hilarious because the gang member with the problem with him member has taken a Viagra pill and the effects are obvious!
It’s too violent to be a carry on genre and way too funny to be taken as a serious piece of drama. With this quality of actors, and a willingness to let them adlib scenes it works A solid story and very funny sub plots make a great laughing out loud experience. Not one to watch with your Nan, and surprisingly for a violent gangster film not just one for the boys, I think the ladies will find it quite funny too. Get some mates round and crack open the beers and have a jolly good laugh.
Some great one liners from the film…“You can’t steal a warehouse, it’s big. It’s heavy. It’s stuck to the ground”
“Your fat and I’ll throw you in the river”
“say something Italian” (you will only see this as funny when you have seen the Kathy Burke sex scene!
So if Denise Van Outen getting very saucy, Ray Winstone playing a gangster, a Kathy Burke sex scene and laughing out loud humour doesn’t make you want to watch this film, you should go back to watching Coronation Street!
