I seem to have a bit of a library obssession at the moment, checking out big piles of books at a time then panicking that I'll never read them in the 3 weeks that my library gives me! Still, I carry on reserving books and checking them, usually based on my Amazon recommendations. This time, I thought I would try something a bit different from my usual chick-lit, so I chose this particular book, which to be honest really didn't look like something I would pick myself but I am very glad that I did.
Olivia Felicone has just been made a widow after her husband Luca died in a car accident. Luca was the love of Olivia's life, and she's not sure how she can go on without him. She isn't close to the Felicone family, but begins an affair with Luca's twin brother Marc behind everyone's backs, as it makes them both feel closer to Luca. But is it ...
?George?s Marvellous Medicine? was the first of Roald Dahl?s stories which we read to our eldest son. It?s the story of a little boy who has a real stinker of a grandmother. She?s rude and scary and bosses him around all the time. One day George?s mum and dad have both gone out, leaving him alone with his Grandma. George has had enough of Grandma bullying him and so decides to cure her of her cantankerous behaviour with a special potion, which he?ll give her instead of her usual medicine.
He finds an enormous saucepan in the kitchen and lugs it all around the house, essentially putting in a bit of everything he finds [lipsticks and canary seed included!]. He even makes sure he adds some brown paint so that it is the same colour as Grandma?s real medicine! He then boils it up to make sure that everything?s nicely mixed together before ...
You could be forgiven for thinking when picking up this book that it is going to be a very romantic read embellished with hearts and flowers along the way. The image of Cupid on the front cover along with references to Valentines day would lead you to this conclusion as well as the title - The Idea of Love. However, that's not what this novel is about at all and the author, Louise Dean, presents a very different idea of love indeed.
I have to admit that when I started reading this book, I did not think I was going to enjoy it very much. All of the main characters appeared self-centred, shallow and extremely unsympathetic and I could not imagine that I was going to care very much about what happened. Yet, as I continued to read, I was somehow drawn towards these intriguing characters and I found that I wanted to read more. Therefore it ...

Beautiful reissue of Louise Erdrich's most famous novel from one of the most celebrated American writers of her generation. Set on and around a North Dakota reservation 'Love Medicine' tells of the intertwined fates of two families the Lamartines and the Kashpaws. The women at the heart of this extraordinary community are survivors in a harsh and tumultuous world united and sustained by the strength and diversity of their love -- the sweet delusion of the flesh; the powerful pull of blood ties; the affection for the old ways vying with the irresistible lure of the new. Their voices mingle and blend to form a continuous braided sequence of narratives which pulse with the sheer energy and drama of life. Greeted with great critical acclaim when first published in 1984 'Love Medicine' won the US National Book Critics' Circle Award. Louise Erdrich has now substantially revised and expanded the novel for this edition to complement its companion novels 'The Beet Queen Tracks' and 'The Bingo Palace'.
