Lucozade Sport was first launched in the UK in 1993 by the then company SmithKline Beecham - now GlaxoSmithKline. It was promoted with that classic advert with John Barnes in a locker room drinking the stuff from a can then dropping it, and kicking it into the bin - an advertising classic! Since then the brand has grown to become the UK's number onesportsdrink and the 5th biggest soft drink in the UK impulse market!! Quite an acheivement from a brand that until the early 90's didn't exist and evolved from the main brand Lucozade Energy.
The Flavours - Lucozade Sport now comes in the following flavours (following some flavour changes this year) 1. Orange 2. Raspberry 4. Mixed Citrus 3. Tropical, 5. Lemon
So what is new - Lucozade Sport With Caffeine Boost!!!!
This was launched on 4th June 2007 in the UK market. Its intention was to not only give people the physical edge whilst competing but to give them the mental edge as well. It is backed up by scientific research by the LSSA that it works! It comes in one flavour only that is Lemon Plus.
It comes in a 500ml single bottle and is normally 10p more expensive than a standard bottle of Lucozade Sport - in my sports club for £1.30 but i have seen it being sold for £1.10 in some corner shops and a 4 pack multipack that is available for about 15p more - it is selling at my local Sainsbury's for £3.13
Not quite sure what most of those things are but per 100ml: 28 calories, 6.4g Carbohydrate, 3.5g sugar, Fat Nil, Caffeine 16mg.
Be aware there is the same amount of caffeine in one of these bottles as there is in a can of Red Bull!!!
Does it Work??
In short, yes it does! I have been using Lucozade sport for many years now and I am fortunate to play hockey at a high standard. It has been common practise to use caffeine supplements before games and this is a great combination of the two. It tastes great - not too sweet on the palate like some drinks can be. What effects do you feel - well the science bit says that the caffeine will be at its peak in your body an hour after drinking it. We tend to drink it 45 mins before a match starts - and we'll have a couple. This can be an expensive way of doing it but believe me it is red hot stuff! Downsides - drinking before an evening match/training session - the first time I drank this before a training session that started at 8pm I was still wide awake at 2am!! I have now added this into my everyday life - got it in the car for when I'm feel weary - great pick up and cheaper than red bull (oh and it tastes so much better!)
Summary - this is a great drink that is aimed at the sports market but definitely has a use off the sports pitch like for drivers etc. Give it go and let me know how you get on with it. I hope you get on with it as well as we have - interestingly, since the start of the season we have not conceded a goal in the second half of a game and have always played better in this half - could be conincidence…..?

Great review. Not keen on energy drinks, prefer water when I go the gym. Anna

This is interesting, I like lucozade but caffeine is not so good for me, it tends to make me a bit twitchy. Good if it helps your performance though and I may just have to try it once to see if it agrees with me. Louise
