What is a GuineaPig?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Guineapig is a small rodent whos real name is a cavy. Guineapigs originally came from South America and wild GuineaPigs were eaten as food all over the world. There are many different breeds of GuineaPig and they also have various different hair styles such as short, long, wiry, tufty etc.
A few years ago now I brought two baby guineapigs from a breeder. One was a short-haired guineapig which had a smooth glossy black and white coat so he was named Badger. The other guineapig was a white long haired guineapig which my brother name John-Smith (after the dude in Pocahontas).
Advantages: Very loving Disadvantages: Can be smelly
, although it is ok if it runs away from your hand if you try to touch it, this is natural as guineapigs are shy
- Their coat, in general, should be thick and shiny (more about coats later)
- Their eyes should be bright and free of discharge
- Their nails and teeth should be relatively short and not overgrown
~*~ Housing and Bedding ~*~
Cages are easily available from pet stores or even some garden centres, it will cost you around £20 - £30
Each guineapig should have AT LEAST two square feet in their cage for them to run around in, this is the bare minimum required for your guineapig to have sufficient exercise and space. If you are housing two guineapigs together this space will need to be adjusted to the amount of guineapigs you are having.
Your cage should, under no circumstances, have a wire cage. This can be very ...
