This work is from the bestselling author of "Watermelon". What happens when a psychic tells Lucy that she'll be married within the year? Her flatmates panic! What is going to...
more...happen to their blissful existence of eating take-out, drinking too much wine, bringing men home, and never vacuuming? Lucy reassures her friends that she's far too busy arguing with her mother and taking care of her irresponsible father to get married. And then there's the small matter of not even having a boyfriend. But then Lucy meets gorgeous, unreliable Gus. Could he be the future Mr Lucy Sullivan? Or could it be handsome Chuck? Or Daniel, the world's biggest flirt? Or even cute Jed, the new guy at work? But will she find her soulmate? "'Keyes' tale is both hilarious and suspenseful, and so warmly told it feels just like comfy girltalk with a cherished friend." - "Booklist". "Throughout, the effervescent narrative is fuelled by witty repartee; though its outcome may be predictable, its sentiments are heartfelt, and its progress is sprightly. Fans of "Bridget Jones" will be delighted." - "Publishers Weekly". "With brilliant characterisations and sparkling, witty dialogue, Marian Keyes has created an upbeat, wonderfully observed slice of what it is like to live in London, work in a dead end job and hope each Friday night that Mr Right will come along." - "Irish News". "It belongs to the smart gossip-with-girlfriends genre..." - "Financial Times". From the PublisherFrom the bestselling Author of The Other Side of the Story See all Product Description

Full review
I have been working on reading this book for weeks. So long in fact that I even renewed it at the libary - twice! In the end I just decided to take it back and be done with it.

I have read a couple of Keyes other novels and found them to be quite good but I have to say I was rather disappointed with this one.

The book is about, obviously because of the title, Lucy Sullivan who goes to see a fortune teller with a couple of mates from her work. This opening part of the story for me was far too long winded but I decided to stick with it, I mean I had only just got started!

Lucy is obviously, again by the title, predicted that she would be getting married within X amount of months. For starters a winter wedding was not HER idea of a wedding. Taking it for a load of old rubbish her and her friends head off home. Over a period of time her work mates predictions start coming true and it's only a matter of time before Lucy starts to believe her's will come true too, although inside she is trying to convince herself it won't secretly hoping it will!!!

Other main characters in the book are Karen and Charlottle, Lucy's flatmates. Karen is very bossy, over powering and sometimes quite rude. Charlotte is dippy, with a kind heart and quite loveable. Then there's Daniel. Daniel is also Lucy's best friend who she has known for years and practically knows her inside out. He is well off and well dressed. They are just mates and have a laugh together. Lucy's parents are brought into the book too. Daniel and Lucy go to visit them but it is a chore for Lucy who is quite horrible and sarcastic to her mum. She has a lot of love for her alcoholic father. There was a mention of her brother in a phonecall to her work but not much else apart from that.

Lucy as a character herself to me becomes very boring. Sad, somewhat lonely, depressed and feeling sorry for herself. I didn't mind this to start with (at the end of the day it's her character in the book) but after a while of reading the same thing over and over about how she was going to be left on the shelf blah blah blah I started to get bored again.

Then she meets Gus, Yippee, she's happy. He's mad, unpredictable and slightly crazy (also unreliable and gets her to pay for most things) She's over the moon and falls for him straight away. As your reading you can almost see where this is going. Karen organises a dinner at the flat for all three of them and their respective partners (by this time Karen and Daniel have got together) Obviously the wonderful new man in Lucy's life is a no-show disappointing Lucy and ruining the evening. Thats it! Lucy's world is crushed as she knows it when she doesn't hear from Gus for weeks. Cue endless pages of dribble about how she can't cope, whats the point of life without Gus etc etc. Then the next bit which I found quite amusing out of everything I had read was Charlotte set Lucy up on a blind date which caused a small chuckle. Thats about it though.

To be honest I only got a little bit further than this when Gus makes a reapperance, she practically falls at his feet but by this point I was soooo bored I gave up and skipped to the last four or five pages of the book. The outcome was pretty predicatable of course, I wish I had just done that earlier than struggle on though 3/4 of the book.

Overall
I know in life people do get unhappy, be miserable when they break up with someone etc but that isn't my problem. My problem was because it was all in this book I had picked to read. When I'm at work and finished what I am doing on a night shift I need a book thats entertaining, very easy to get into and funny. This was none of those. In fact it was difficult to get into, the characters boring (apart from charlotte), not funny and basically just rubbish. Maybe I should have read until the end and I thought about it a couple of times, but I just couldn't do it. 3/4 of the book and the last few pages was MORE than enough thank you.
I was very disappointed in this book. I hope the next I read by Keyes is better.

Would I recommend this - No
If you must rent it from the libary don't shell out good money for this!
