Lucy left Australia when she was 16 and now, nine long years later, she is returning for the first time to go to a wedding. It's been too long since she last saw her friends and now Molly, her best friend, and Sam, her first love, are getting married - to each other.

But Lucy is now happy with her life living in a beautiful flat in London with her gorgeous lawyer boyfriend, James, and with a job that she couldn't love more. But just as the plane to Sydney is about to take off, Lucy receives a text from James' mobile that brings her world crashing down.

Now her happy and settled life in London seems miles away and, after meeting Nathan, Sam's very sexy surfer brother, Lucy can't help wondering if she'd be happier elsewhere.

My opinion

After reading and absolutely loving my first book of Paige Toon's, Cashing Daisy, I was quite excited to start on the second of her books that I had, Lucy in the Sky.

The book is split between Lucy's holiday in Sydney and her life at home in London and it does feel like a very big line of distinction between the two, so much so that it actually seems like a really long time ago that I was reading about her time in Australia. When she's in Sydney, Lucy seems like a very happy and easy-going girl, having fun and laughing with her friends and feeling a connection to Nathan. But when she returns to London the whole mood of the book changes. She isn't as close to her friends at home as she is to her two best friends in Sydney. There always seems to be a problem with her boyfriend whether it's her doubting him or him staggering into bed at a ridiculous time of the morning. Although she has work and responsibilities at home and she isn't on holiday like she was in Sydney, her life just seems more dull and she doesn't seem as happy or quirky.

Lucy struggles between deciding which guy she wants to be with. She has shared many years with James who is a successful and caring man. Whereas Nathan lives on the other side of the world, is two years younger than her, has no job and no future prospects. But still something pulls her towards Nathan and she finds that she can't stop thinking about him.

Even though James seems like the perfect boyfriend, looking after Lucy, buying her expensive and thoughtful gifts, there is something about him that just seems off. Maybe it's because right at the start of the book Lucy receives a text message from James' phone, but not from James himself. It's a text from someone else claiming that they have slept with him. This immediately gives us a feeling of dislike for James and a constant niggling feeling that he's not as lovely as he makes out. Add to that the fact that he has a tendency to tell little white lies and to stay out late drinking through the night, and the niggling doubting feelings about him continue.

Nathan on the other hand, despite the obvious cons such as living in Australia, is a very likeable character. He is very laid-back and easy-going like a typical Australian surfer should be, as well as being so fun to be around and extremely sexy. It's obvious throughout the whole book who Lucy should end up with, and to be honest, it's obvious who she will end up with but this doesn't stop the story from being excellent and as every page went past I just desperately wanted Lucy and Nathan to give in to temptation.

This is a brilliantly funny book and I found myself laughing out loud so many times. Yet it's hugely realistic and it's both sad and hurtful to see Lucy and the other characters struggling through their difficult issues.

Paige Toon has to be one of the best writers of this genre as I've given both of her books 5 stars as they make truly excellent reading.

Summary: A lawyer. A surfer. A 24-hour flight.
