If you are not familiar with Tetris:
The guiding and rotating of various shaped blocks, consisting of various colours, down a screen until you make lines of the same colour which are then deleted from the screen scoring points. The process then continues with speed increasing as you progress and the number of colours increasing also.
It's addictive gaming even for many people who do not normally play puzzle games.
Now we have Lumines for Sony's new baby hand-held console the PSP (Play Station Portable)
I have to say I preordered this game knowing my wife would love it (a tetris fan) and I knew that I'd love the odd game too.
The concept is similar to tetris except this time you are creating square blocks of the same colour, which are elimated once made.
There are bonus blocks appear from time to time setting off a chain reaction and deleting yet more blocks.
As you progress through the levels, like with Tetris, the action becomes fast and furious. However the PSP controls are perfectly configured for the game and you'll be pressing buttons like there's no tomorrow as your skill and points increase.
High scores may of course be saved for posterity.
With one player mode, 2 player mode versus (a very skilled) artifiicial opponent, 2 player mode versus another human opponent via a wireless connection between 2 PSPs (note you each need to own the game for this) you are spoilt for choice as regards to who you want your opponent (if any) to be.
That's not all there's challenge mode where background "skins" and music change as you progress through the levels. Single skin mode leaves the background the same unless the player changes it. Time attack mode is relatively self explanatory there are various set times from 60 to 600 seconds to score as many points as possible. Puzzle mode is superb fun wher you must make specific shapes which are presented to you to progress.
The better you do the more you unlock. Specific things to unlock are new background music tracks (which for a change aren't irritating and are fitting for the game i.e very techno style) also new character avatars become available. (note: an avatar is a little image you chose to represent you in the game). The avatars are rather amusingly animated as you play.
If you like a game that you can pick up and play without even referring to the instruction booklet, which you can play for a few minutes or a few hours and still have as much fun then this is for you.
Interestingly it is one of only a couple of PSP launch games which received 9/10 from practically every magazine review. This is a very fair score.
You will also find it is one of the few PSP titles you can pick up for £29.99 in many places.
In my view it is well worth the price and if you do a bit of shopping around you will find it for £24.99 or less.
Just a thought but this would be a great gift by parents for a child with a PSP - because when they get bored with Lumines and go back to games involving severing limbs etc Mum and Dad will get hour after hour of fun from this while they are at school.

Really great review!
I bought this a while back, but have only just got into it! The learning curve is fairly high, but once oyu get the hang of it, it's easy to forget the time!

Sounds good. I saw it in HMV for £19.99 so I might just have to get my psp a wee present. --- Arla

Advantages: Upgraded version of Tetris, very colourful and Hypnotising Disadvantages: Just an upgraded version of Tetris nothing really added to it apart from Multiplayer mode
