I have been using Lux Flakes for quite a few years now, a friend had told advised me to give them a go for cleaning my leather suite, what I said, but that’s why I buy specialist leather cleaner? So after some investigations she turned out to be right, let me explain further what they are and what you can use them for. ** THE PACKAGING**
These flakes come in a bright royal blue coloured 425g box, nothing fancy you understand, a box like any other soap powder except for all the fancy images and printing. With large white bold text introducing you to LUX FLAKES with the words “cares for special things” written below. There is an silhouette of a lady sporting a white woolly jumper and the Pure New Wool logo can be found on the bottom right hand corner. And all around the box you will find advice, information and manufacturers details. It is an old-fashioned push through the cardboard and lift back opening. **THE
PRODUCT**
Tiny white transparent square flakes of soap with no particular scent, which funnily enough feels like bits of soap with their smooth polished surface. Containing over 99% soap, it contains no bleach; enzymes or brightening agents to ensure your clothing is washed in a gentle and natural manner. Used quite frequently for years until all the likes of Bold, Persil etc came on the scene offering all the added extras, scents etc. I do use Persil myself for machine washing but when it comes to woollens or delicates like tights, baby clothing etc I tend to use Lux as it keeps them soft and fluffy just how your woollens should be, also when Ewan and Amy, my nephew and niece where little I did wash their woollens in Lux because their skin is so delicate and I wanted to make sure their cardigans, jumpers etc were nice and soft against their little bodies.
Although be careful as some people have eczema and this may not be suitable for them, test a small area first of all, just to be on the safe side. The International Wool Secretariat for the washing of Wool mark merchandise has even approved lux Flakes.
It can be used is twin tub washing machines but not drum action washing machines for examples front loading automatics. **USAGE**
To Handwash: Make up a warm soapy solution of Lux Flakes and gently squeeze your delicates, rinse thoroughly in warm water, making sure to remove excess water by rolling in a towel. Ease back into shape whilst damp and dry flat, of course away from direct heat or sunlight. Always handle your delicates carefully taking care not to rub or twist materials. I tend to use it all the time now for cleaning my leather suite as after some investigations I found that although specialist leather cleaners are sold by the very shop you happen to buy your suite from, these over a period of time wear the leather down and remove it’s natural substances, so you will no get maximum use from your suite and after all we do pay a significant amount of money out particular for something like a suite, very often £2-3000, so the very thing we want to be doing to our suite is protecting it but whilst using these specialist cleaners that is not the case eeeek, I can hear you all saying but the manufacturer said!
The first time I tried Lux Flakes to clean my Leather Suite, I added just a small amount of flakes (about ½ a handful), to a bowl of warm water, got a sponge and towel and set about cleaning the suite, gliding the dampened (not soaked) sponge over the leather in soft easy strokes, sometimes there can be a residue of the soap left, just wipe over with the towel (dish towel is ideal as it’s not terry towelling and no fluff is left) and when you are finished leave to dry, it only takes a short while, in fact it’s almost dry immediately. It came up like new better than anything else I had ever used, the leather’s suppleness seemed to return giving it a really nice clean finish, I was really pleased, a better result than specialist cleaners, no harm done to the leather and costs very little, the box I have now I have been using for quite some time so I can’t remember the exact cost, but I think it’s approx £1.79 and if you decide to use only for cleaning the suite, it will last you about 2 years using regularly, for example once per month.
Of course you could also use this to wipe over leather clothing, jackets, even car seats, it would give you the same results every time, saving you a fortune at the dry cleaners no doubt. I would definitely recommend you give it a go, although in my experience it can be difficult to get hold of, I get mine from Safeway and I would imagine most of the large supermarkets would also stock this.
Lever Brother Ltd are so confident you will like the quality and performane of Lux Flakes, they say if you don't they guarantee you rmoney back. They even managed to gain the Queen herself’s approval, so if it's good enough for her then it's good enough for me! Should you need any further advice or information you can contact Lever Brothers Ltd Fabrics Advisory Team on Freephone 0800 776647 between the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
Thanks for reading, I hope you found this useful and please give it a go, you'll not be disappointed, take care Heather:)
