MAC themselves admit that their lipsticks are "What Made Them Famous" and I wholeheartedly agree. Besides the huge range of colours and finishes available, it was in 1994 when they released 'Viva Glam' a deep red shade, whose entire selling prices was donated to Men, Woman and Children living with AIDS that people started to sit up and notice the brand. They now have a total of six charity shades, and I'm sure this is part of the reason they have grown to become such a cult name.
Charity aside, there are many other reasons that MAC Lipsticks have become so popular. As stated before the sheer amount of shades available is probably one of them. Ranging from the deepest, vampiest reds to the palest, baby pinks and everything in between, they really have everything you could ask for. The lipsticks are available in 7 different finishes / textures -
Amplified Cream: Creamy, usually opaque shades with a smooth 'buffed' finish. Most are opaque enough to cover lips natural pigmentation, therefore they can actually lighten the colour of your lips - not something every lipstick can do.
Cremesheen: Smooth, creamy and moisturising. The newest formula that MAC has released, these are said to be the most moisturising of the finishes. Great coverage.
Frost: The Frosts have a medium to high amount of shimmer in them. Leave an almost metallic veil of colour across the lips. The extremely frosty shades can feel a little 'gritty' on the lips and need a good moisturiser to be applied beforehand or they can dry the lips slightly.
Glaze: Less colour payoff than some of the other finishes, but leave a lovely high-shine finish to the lips. The Glazes have generally little to no shimmer/frost so are great for a more natural look.
Lustre: Similar to the Glazes, these also have a slick, wet look finish though these do have some shimmer. Long lasting once on the lips. Look almost like a lipbalm and moisturises like one too.
Matte: Exactly that. Gives the lips a flat, retro effect. Very pigmented and sometimes require a matching Lip Liner to stop them bleeding into fine lines. Lasts ages once on though they can dehydrate the lips if a primer/moisturiser is not applied underneath.
Satin: The Satins are semi-matte, but much more moisturising. Rich, opaque payoff and long lasting. My favourite of all the finishes.
At Ł11.00 each they fall somewhere in the middle of the Lipstick Markets price range. I think they are definately worth this price and will continue to purchase them. Also, MAC offer a 'Back-to-MAC' program, where you can get a free Lipstick of your choice when you return 6 empty MAC containers for recycling.
You can either apply straight from the tube, though this can be a problem with some of the darker, more pigmented shades, or with one of their three lip brushes. Luckily MAC have a lot of Lip Liners on offer, so you're sure to find a shade that matches the lipstick well.
Long lasting, huge amount to choose from with a free reward once you have used them up - What more could you ask for?! :-)
