The active ingredient in this is glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), which is a naturally occurring substance that has been used for centuries to improve the appearance of the skin. Of all the AHA's, Glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, has the greatest ability to penetrate the skin due to it's smaller molecular size. Glycolic acid has the ability to act as a superior moisturiser for the skin. Glycolic acid is the only AHA or product that is small enough to penetrate to the basal layer (the deepest skin layer in your dermis). In addition, and perhaps more importantly it unglues and dislodges dead skin cells from the outer surface of the skin, leaving the skin fresher and smoother. These properties enable glycolic acid to be used in reducing the signs of sun damage, acne, pigmentation problems and ingrown hairs. Many skin care products you can purchase from Boots contain Citric acid, which is a AHA but has the largest molecular size of all the AHA's, so is too large to penetrate the skin therefore just sitting on the surface and not being absorbed into the skin and giving results. Another popular AHA used in products is lactic acid and glycolic acid had been clinically proven to be 17% more effective than this. It is quickly absorbed into the skin and doesn't leave you with an oily or greasy residue after use. Your skin may feel slightly tight after application, but as I stated this is not a moisturiser and this step of your skincare routine should always be followed by an application of a moisturiser and a sun protector. Using Continuous Renewal Complex before applying your moisturiser will make your skin more permeable to absorb your moisturiser so it really works and hydrates your skin instead of just sitting on the top moisturising only the top layers which are most likely already dead and about to be shed. An effect of using Continuous Renewal Complex, due to the glycolic acid content is that your skin will tingle, it is not dramatic nor uncomfortable, just tingly. This is the glycolic acid breaking up the damaged skin cells, so may be more noticeable the first few times you use it. You will probably always feel the tingle, but it will reduce with time. I know a lot of people still feel it, but personally I do. Other effects may be slight redness, which will subdue very quickly after use.

This is simple and quick to use, and can be slotted into any skincare routine you already have. In the first week of use, you only use this in the evening and then from week two onwards you use it is the morning and evening. After four weeks of use, you can then introduce a specialist corrector. After cleansing your face, apply a pea sized amount to face and neck. I find it's easiest to scoop up a pea sized amount and gently rub inbetween two fingers and then apply, rather than inbetween several fingers as you can loose quite a bit of the product. It is very important you do follow the amount to use correctly, you must not get carried away and apply any more than stated otherwise you could cause your skin to become too sensitive to the product and you could get a reaction. As long as you apply the amount as and when you are supposed to, you will have no problems.
