Advantages: An excellent quality food for optimum nutrition Disadvantages: It is expensive
I have just got a new puppy in the house and I am trying hard to make sure he has a balanced diet of quality food. I do feed him a 'complete' food in the form of Hills puppy food but I do like to add some meat to that and in general I give him raw mince which he quite enjoys.
However it is helpful to have a tinned option for those times when I haven't remembered to take the mince out of the freezer in time for it to thaw or for the ... ...to take a packed lunch with him - yes really!
I am keen to get him off to a good start and as he is a small breed it is easy to feed him quality food as he doesn't eat much - (if I think back to the days when I bred Great Danes I do realise that with the quantities they ate it would have been expensive to feed premium brands).

About Applaws
Applaws are a Cheshire based company who sell premium cat and dog foods which contain real meat and fish and plenty of it. When you open the tin it smells wholesome and looks appealing - quite unlike the nondescript brown smelly mess you get in many brands these days.
The Applaws brand is a natural dog food which has been specially formulated to contain nothing more than the ingredients they list on the tin. They say it is a completely natural, gluten free complimentary dog food which does not contain any animal derivatives, by-products or cereal.
As it is a complimentary dog food you do need to provide supplements or mix it with a complete feed to ensure that your dog gets a balanced diet.
The Flavours available
I bought a multipack which contained five tins of the food decribed as follows:
Chicken fillet - 75% chicken meat, 1% rice, 24% water
Chicken, Ham & vegetables - 28% chicken meat, 15% ham, 8% pumpkin, 8% carrot, 8% green peas, 5% rice, 28% water
Chicken & vegetables - 45% chicken meat, 8% pumpkin, 8% carrot, 8% green peas, 5% rice, 26% water
When you open each tin all of the ingredients are identifiable and the food looks tasty. My little puppy, Ellery, polished off the various flavours with enthusiasm and clearly found them very enjoyable.Personally I like the fact that the meat content is clearly indicated and is recognisable when you open the tin. This dog food is not cheap, costing around 75p for a 156g tin - less if you buy the multipack - but in my view it is streets ahead of most other brands because of the meat content.
Would I recommend it?
I most certainly would if you have a small dog or want to give an added treat to a bigger dog by mixing it in with their dried food. It would also be great for a dog recovering from illness where you want to tempt them to eat by giving them a real quality food. If you are on a tight budget then this brand it likely to be out of reach for anything other than the occasional treat.
You proably won't find this brand on many supermarket shelves but it is stocked at Pets at Home and you can buy it online - well worth looking out for in my view.
