The M-Audio Fast Track Pro is all round a fairly good piece of kit. I originally bought mine as my very first audio/usb interface to use with my Macbook and Logic Pro when I first started university, 2 years ago. I am now in my final year, and have progressed up to using Pro Tools (M-powered, as this is the only version supported by the Fast Track Pro.) I have to date used the fast track pro to create semi-professional projects. The sound quality is, I have to say, very good for a £120 interface, although I have had problems attempting to get a decent input signal strength, especially when using the built in phantom power. However, the integrated phantom power is effective, even when the unit is powered solely by USB, although the option for mains power is available, though the adapter is not included in the box. I got a universal adapter from Maplin for £6.99. The Fast Track Pro has 2 XLR inputs, and 2 more digital inputs on the back of the unit. It also has 4 analogue outputs. There is also the capability of using S/PDIF technology. One thing I will note, is that if you use this unit with a Macbook, be aware that only the front USB plug will have enough power to run the unit effectively - this is due to the way USB bus power is split between the ports. The Fast Track Pro is light and portable, easily able to slip into my laptop bag and take on a mobile recording session. Generally, as a first interface or a portable tool, I cannot recommend this unit enough, however, if budget allows, I would recommend something with more ins and outs, and higher quality pre amps.
Advantages: Easy to use Disadvantages: Without an instruction manual or much online help i had to work out how to use it.
...to recording, i found the m-audio very easy to use. My fast track pro came without a software cd so i didn't get the ableton live software or any instructions (although i use Logic Pro with it). Even so, i worked out how to set it up and start recording my electric guitar using a lead into the fast track pro and then a vocal mic into the fast track pro so that it could be used on Logic. The quality is pretty decent and with basic experimentation ... ...work out how to change the volume of the signal etc. The green light on eitherside of each input are very useful as they clearly show whether a signal is being received or not and a quick adjustment on the gain knob changes the level to that you desire. i would thoroughly recommend this from a beginners perspective and as i increase my skills and knowledge of recording i am sure the fast track pro will serve me well. ...
