Mac OS X (Complete Package)

Advantages: Very similar to Windows XP
Disadvantages: Very different from Mac OS 9

purchasing this. When I installed this onto my Mac I had only one software compatibility problem and that was with a very old archiving program I had been using - other than that it was all ok. I have resolved my compatibility problem by not spending out money on a new archiving program but by creating 2 start-up discs on the one computer - there for on the Mac at the moment I have OS X and OS 9 installed but on different discs so as to not interfer with each other. This is very easy to set up but it does mean that if you are working in OS X and you then need to access your archive files you do then need to go to your startup disc, select OS 9 and restart your computer and then do the same to get back to OS X once you have done this. Also on OS X it is much more user friendly. It lets you organise your files like digital images, e-books etc. in ...

Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar

Advantages: New OS 10.2 much faster, more stable, more features
Disadvantages: Paying for the upgrade when I had paid for the preview and then the upgrade to 10.1

At last it is here. I saw it demonstrated at MacWorld NY in July, and it is everything they said it would be. Installation was a breeze - you have multiple options for installation under options including a clean install with archiving of all your passwords and settings! This is a really great feature, which means you don't have to merge system folders, as you did in the past. No writing down of all those settings and finding that you forgot one of the most important. I have now installed 10.2 on 3 Macs - G4 TiPB, iBook (2001) and an iMacDV (1999). They all run much faster - noticably so on the older G3 machines. With the G4, here comes an even bigger step - that of Quartz EXTREME graphics, using the power of the G4 chip. If you though OS X was beautiful before, now is just awesome. There are now virtually none of my legacy ...

Review of Mac OS X 10.1 Complete package

Mac OS X matures with age!

Advantages: Faster and better. New features for both home and pro users.
Disadvantages: Hardware-hog, pricey upgrade from Panther.

to this rule. Quartz means that instead of the CPU being burdened with rendering on-screen 2D graphics, the OS loads all the processing onto the graphics card. Of course, for the card to cope with this demand it must be modern, equipped with supporting instructions onboard and have at least 16Mb of VRAM. That, my folks, rules out the old iMacs and means an extra load on the poor old G3 processor which has to compensate for the incompatible graphics card. If you are happy to settle for half, Tiger is a good upgrade for your ageing machine, but if not, stay with earlier versions of OS X. Also worth mentioning is that Tiger has become even more of a memory hog over Panther and will utilise between 2-10Gb of Hard Drive space for Virtual Memory as well as a good 512Mb (preferably 1Gb) of real memory, so it is really important that enough free ...
