I purchased my first Mac at the beginning of this year (MacBook) and I've never regretted doing so. The machine's hardware was something spectacular but it's done justice by the quite outstanding operating system which comes in the guise of OS X 10.4.
OS X 10.4 is arguably the most impressive operating sytem to look at. The amazing smooth liquid effects, the scalable icons and attention to detail is brilliant. It makes the whole system an absolute job to use. But the fun doesn't stop there. OS X 10.4 handles like a dream too. If you're a diehard Windows user then if your coming across to the Mac for the first time you'll definitely experience something new. Programs are handled differently (for example closing the window doesn't actually close the program) and your applications are stored in an Applications folder rather than in a cascading menu.
Microsoft Windows XP and Vista come bundled with a few applications but unfortunately what's on offer isn't anything over the top. Apple supply some darn right brilliant programs as standard so you really can get going out of the box. In Windows XP, Microsoft offer Paint for image editing. Apple offer iPhoto which is not only an editor but a photo management product. Windows XP comes with Movie Maker which is lackluster in features but OS X comes with iDVD and iMovie which are extremely professional and handle your entire project from start to finish no problem.
OS X has a great feature called the Dock which has a number of features, First of all you can store a number of your favorite programs inside of it so you can have easy, one-click access to the applications you use the most. All currently active programs are also stored here so you know whats running. The bar running across the top of your screen holds the program menus as well as he clock, wireless network connection status, battery charge (if on a portable machine) and more.
OS X is an outstanding operating system that I now cannot live without... seriously. Unfortunately the only way to really experience this for yourself is to purchase an AppleMac which can make the cost shoot up. You won't be disappointed!
