Advantages: Pure, smooth, nice taste and creamy texture. Disadvantages: Bland packaging, not good if you like your ice-cream fancy, probably makes you fat if you eat too much.

///Image/// Mackies portrays itself as a sort of large family business in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with a staff of “70 people and 500 Jersey Cows”, and the packaging is no noveau art either, it’s a dull but simple pale yellow and blue round 1 litre plastic tub with a plastic lid. It’s very proud of being Scottish too.
The tub draws attention to the ice cream’s purity and traditionality, it’s very different to designer ice-creams (like Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s etc…), and if there was an advert for this on TV, there certainly will not be a woman wearing silky lingerie devouring this as if it was massaging her taste buds (well unless if she was Scottish). This will not be a product that children will be queuing to buy because of its packaging.
Where this product places itself certainly makes a fresh difference. One would think that there would be lots of “pure” ice creams in the market, but the luxury market is dominated by 500ml works of art (even jockey Frankie Dettori has his own brand of Italian ice cream) all with enough flavours to require the services of Hans Blix. Then you have the lower market luxury ice creams like Carte D’Or etc. These ice cream are flavoured, the plainest being vanilla, but none of them are flavourless, pure ice-cream; this is what Mackies Traditional ice cream is.
///Taste/// If Jeremy Clarkson was to write a review on a designer ice cream (say Haagen Dazs Pralines & Cream), he’d say that it had enough of a sugary taste to decay a whole generation of children’s teeth, with strange bits and pieces inside that cause a change of texture as often as David Beckham changes his hair style.
But what about Mackies? He’d say it was “just creamy with no artificial flavourings or preservatives. But that’s not a bad thing….”
You see the light taste is like tasting a fragrant cream, it’s flowery, revitalising and very addictive, and you won’t feel you need to gargle afterwards like eating some flavours of designer ice-creams. It’s a little different to the taste of soft dairy ice-cream, it’s a little more fragrant and sweeter, with less of a milky taste, but more of a creamy taste.
This ice-cream has a very neutral smell compared with others.
Personally I recommend it with some soft strawberries.
///Texture/// Mackies’ texture is in between your 90p 2-litre ice-cream and £3 500ml designer ice cream, so it don’t take too long to soften. It is relative hard but not difficult to spoon. It feels expensive and it is as smooth as far more expensive brands. It is certainly not icy at all!
///Value/// It costs about £2.30 for a 1 Litre tub. Now compare this with £3.30 for a 500ml tub of Haagen Dazs and you can see a lot of value, especially when Mackies often reduce the price to £1.99. Then you compare it with the cheapest ice cream which sells at 90p for 2 litres and you realise you are paying 4 times as much; is it worth it? I think it is because your 90p for 2 litres ice cream has more ice than cream, this is all cream!
///Verdict/// Mackies traditional ice cream is simply iced cream, and its simplicity has placed it into a niche market. It’s perfect for people who want things simple and nice tasting, perhaps for people who like to see women without wearing make up or enhancements. You probably won’t like Mackies traditional ice cream if the ice cream you purchase has is more colourful than Crayola children’s gift pack or contains enough sugar to power a Bently Turbo-R. It really makes a nice break from the ice creams with bells and whistles that dominate the freezer aisles of our supermarkets. Mackies traditional ice cream certainly makes for a good change, however it won’t change your life.

Advantages: Gorgeously creamy, no additives, suitable for vegetarians, not too expensive Disadvantages: The inevitable calories...
This ice cream is far from what I expected it to be. I am not really a vanilla ice cream fan (give me the seductive, wicked pleasure of chocolate ice cream over the frankly often bland, dull or sickly-sweet characteristics of calorie-wasting vanilla any day) but little did I know when I plucked the tub out of our freezer (in the interests of a good opinion and my serotonin levels (serotonin is a chemical in the brain triggered by, among other things, ... ...was not vanilla ice cream…
Mackie’s of Scotland Organic Luxury Dairy Ice Cream (oh what a mouthful…) is in fact, to use their own words, a ‘traditional ice cream’. This is an ice cream made from fresh milk and double cream with no added flavourings (not even the vanilla that I had been expecting, as I discovered when I came to peruse the ingredient list). It also contains no artificial colours or preservatives and all its ingredients are natural ...

Advantages: A gorgeous creamy taste Disadvantages: Not a soft scoop!
This ice cream is called a Luxury Dairy Ice Cream. It is made in Scotland, Aberdeenshire to be precise. And unfortunately (for some) is only really widely available in Scotland. However it can be found in other parts of the country, you just have to look a little harder! I have a confirmed sighting in Kent recently. It is stocked in most supermarkets (eg Sainsburys and Safeways) and Iceland.
It costs around £4.50 to £5.00 for a 2 litre container. ... ...for everyday use and certainly not for children! I have found the best way to buy it is to stock up when it has been on special offer in Safeway and Iceland when I have got it half price. You can also get it in a 1 litre tub. There are also flavoured varieties like chocolate and strawberry available (only in 1 litre), but I am not a fan of them as I prefer to enjoy the creamy flavour of the original.
The manufacurer claims "the finest ingredients ...

...one litre pottle (tub) of Mackies of Scotland, Luxury Dairy Ice Cream and boy it went down a treat.
Always follow the instructions I say, she did, so that mean't letting the ice cream sit a little while before serving. As advised, this allowed us to ``savour the unique flavour''.
It really is unique: made with fresh milk and double cream which taste-wise does make a difference to this delicious icy dessert.
The ingredients are clear and for those ... ...something I'm quite keen about, Mackies ice cream has no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives: there's enough of those around in other everyday foods. On the attractive packaging it tells the nutritional value of the different ingredients, in the ice cream, and notes that it is suitable for vegetarians and is gluten free.
All in all, this is a wonderful ice cream to come out of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, enjoy with all sorts of meals: so ...

...night brought home with him Mackies Dairy Ice Cream. I was a bit disappointed when I first saw it because I was making a chocolate pudding that is "usually" lip-licking delicious when served with the right kind of ice cream. I asked him why he decided to buy it and he said he had overheard an old couple shopping for ice cream say how wonderful it was. I wondered, "what do old people know?" But neither the blue and cream packaging nor the anaemic ... ...pleasures awaiting you when you sample this milky white ice cream. I finally begrudgingly served up the ice cream with the pudding. Expecting the worst I closed my eyes and tasted. Oh my word! It was the best ice cream I had ever had in my whole life. It gave the pudding the extra oomph that it needed. My husband thoroughly enjoyed it and I have to say, those old folks in the store really knew what they were talking about!
We had a friend stay for ...

Advantages: The BEST dairy icecream ever! Disadvantages: Once you pop, you can't stop!!
For anyone that loves icecream but has never had 'real' dairy icecream, then this is a must. Forget about any other icecream you've ever had and get your taste buds around this, it's guaranteed to please! I first tried this when it was on special offer in my local shop, I probably wouldn't have bought it normally but a bargain is a bargain and I do like my icecream (better than *** but shhhhh....... don't tell the hubby!! ;-) ) Once I got home I ... ...BIG mistake, I was hooked from the first spoonful and the whole 1 litre tub had been eaten by the end of the day :-O! The taste is so creamy and delicious, it makes you think of farms and cows and countryside and good living! OK - that may sound weird but wait til you try it!
I have found that my local Safeway stock it and at around £2.50 for 1 litre you may think it sounds expensive (I would have under normal circumstances and like I said I initially ...
