I have a travel sytem pushchair combo that I have been pretty happy with but boy is it heavy to lug about! This was fine when sproglet was small but when he hit 6 months or so, action had to be taken!
I went to Mothercare to find a stroller that I could use when in town (I live in the sticks and spend most of my time ploughing through fields) and that would not break my back getting in and out of the car.
We chose the Maclaren rather on a whim. It was fairly inexpensive (approx £70), was lightweight and seemed easy to put up and down. I am really pleased we chose it.
The Triumph comes in a charcoal shade and quite a bright red. It is not a designer stroller but does look quite smart.
At approx 11lbs, this is a really light weight pram. It comes with a strap along the back so that you can collapse it and hang the whole thing over your shoulder when necessary. This is SO useful as it frees up your hands to carry the baby when you need to climb steps (my station has no lift) and you are not dependant on finding someone to help you.
The Maclaren is really easy to collapse, just lift two bars and push the handles forward. It is sold as a one handed model but I have always needed to use two. Maybe I have just not found the knack! It is really easy to put up. Undo the stow away clip and then just shake it out and lock in place with your foot.
The handles are padded and bend slightly inwards. This looks a bit odd but actually makes the Maclaren really easy to push and very responsive to manouver. I am just over 5' and the height of the handles suits me really well. My 6' husband finds it comfortable too though.
Although light, the pram feels pretty robust and tough. It has a tough nylon covering which has (so far) stood up to plenty of clunking about and living in the boot.
The straps are broad and quite soft so they do not rub a baby or make them feel too constrained. They also seem very good to chew! The clip is strong but smooth and so you should not catch fingers in it.
It seems to be a comfortable stroller and my son is quite happy to sleep in it. The angle is not very adjustable though and I do not think that it would be very comfy for a baby under 6 months or so. We bought ours when Alex was six months (and he's quite big) but he took a month or so to get really comfortable.
The hood is easily adjustable and is secured to the main unit with poppers. We managed to tear the hood around the poppers but Mothercare replaced it with no quibble (there is a 12 month guarantee).
The stoller has 8 hard, swivel wheels which makes it feel balanced and sturdy. They move well and give you plenty of agility. They are hopeless over gravel though. Bear this in mind even if you only have to go up a gravel path regularly, they really are that poor on that surface. They work well on grass and quite rough ground though.
There is a rain hood which is effective and easy to attach to the hood. I don't often use it but it stores well in the under seat net. Unfortunately though, that is about all that fits in the net. There is very little storage space and if you overfill it, it hits the floor. The net is also pretty hard to access when there is a baby in situ. It is fine for a few nappies and bottles but it is not going to take your shopping.
The other big problem is the brakes. They work on a push to the side fitting but they are really weedy. I would not park this stroller on anything but a flat surface as you just cannot rely on the brake.
Overall, this is a really effective, user friendly stroller. It is great for towns and trains and generally nipping about. Just keep it away from gravel and don't park on a slope!
