I have had a Silver Cross pushchair since Harry was born in March 06, and although I really love that buggy, I have been looking for something smaller for going shopping with, especially now the shops will be busy with people starting their Christmas shopping. I have loved Maclaren buggies for a while, and my partner finally decided that we could get one. I settled on a Triumph, one of the smallest buggies in the Maclaren range, and I am so thrilled with it, I thought I would write a little review on it!
Maclaren are probably one of the most well known lightweight pushchair manufacturers. They are most famous for their umbrella-folding buggies which you will mums all over the UK pushing around, and there are many different buggies to suit all needs available from them. Maclaren began in 1965 and have become bigger and better since then, and are now stocked all over the world.
Now, as I said, the Maclaren Triumph is one of the smallest buggies in the Maclaren range, only the Volo is smaller than this one. One of the main features that I like is its basic weight is only 5kg (11 lbs) which is tiny compared to some of the
other buggies around. I can easily lift this with just one hand, and I am not a strong person so this is a real bonus for me. Although it is very lightweight, this doesn't mean that it isn't strong and reliable, quite the opposite in fact! The buggy can carry a child who weighs up to 15kg (33 lbs), which I would say is roughly a 3 year old, as Harry is just 27 lbs at 19 months old. And by 3, most children don't require a pushchair anymore so this will do you until then, perfect!
This buggy has quite a few features which made me choose it over any of the other buggies in the Maclaren range, aside from just its weight and size. The buggy features a 5 point harness, which is the safest harness you can use for a child, because it holds their whole body in place, via 2 shoulder straps, 2 side straps and a strap between the child's legs. This is strong webbing straps which are easy to clean and adjust, making it easy for you to strap your child into the buggy quickly and easy. It also 2 quick release buttons at the side so you can remove the harness from your baby quickly.
The seat also has a few seat positions. Of course, the main one is sitting up nice and straight, and this is how most people will use the buggy most of the time. You can also unclip the fastener at the back which will allow the seat back to recline, so if your child falls asleep, they will be more comfortable. The buggy also comes with a carry strap which is attached to both handles, and a clip at the bottom of the frame of the pushchair, so you can get it in and out of your boot easily. This is a great idea from Maclaren, and something I think other pushchair manufacturers should take on board without a doubt!
Now, the buggy also comes with a sun hood, which is fantastic for the summer when you don't want the hash sun to be on the top of your baby's precious head. This gets attached to the frame at the sides of the buggy, near the top of the seat. It has a nice curved edge which looks attractive, and hangs down the back of the chair too. This can be folded flat back when it is not in use, and opened when the sun is out. I really like this, and it is a good addition to the buggy, and is also an attractive feature on the pushchair, as the hood co-ordinates with the colour of the main pushchair.
Probably the best thing about the chair is the one handed fold mechanism. I have tried this just one handed to see if it does work, and it really does. Simply kick up the back lever at the bottom of the frame at the back of the chair, push down on the side lever and then push the buggy forward using the handles. Then the holding clip will fasten itself and the buggy is fully collapsed. To open it, unlock the fastening clip by pulling it away from the frame, pull the handles up and push down on the black lever at the back. Simple isn't it?!
There is one negative I have to mention about this pushchair, and that is the brakes. They are the most annoying and ridiculous brakes I have ever used on a pushchair. Usually there is an obvious lever or something that you have to kick or push with your foot to activate the brake, but on this pushchair, there is a tiny little black lever sitting on top of the back wheels. You have to shove this to the right, and this isn't that easy to do. I sometimes end up bending down and doing it with my hand, that's how annoying it is! You do get used to it, but it is something to bear in mind when choosing this buggy. I do believe a lot of the Maclaren buggies have the same sort of braking system.
You can get the buggy in many different colours, but the ones currently available on the Maclaren website are Crimson, Charcoal, Coal Pink, Coffee Brown and Navy, so a nice variety of colours and something to suit everyone. I have seen the buggy stocked in larger Tesco stores, and many different online retailers. I have seen the prices from £69.99 through to about £80, so make sure you have a good look around to get the best price you can. You should get both the Sun Hood and a raincover when you buy the pushchair.
Cleaning wise, it is very easy with this chair. I am not sure about cleaning the hood to be honest with you, it doesn't look like it removes easily but I expect it is easy enough to sponge clean and shouldn't get too dirty anyway. The main part which will get dirty is of course the seat cover, and this fully removes so you can wash it in the washing machine! Harry forever gets all sorts of his pushchair seat, so I love knowing how easy it is to clean it. Just easily unslot the straps, and pull the cover off the frame gently.
You can buy a couple of added accesories for the pushchair, again readily available on the internet when you do a little search on Google. You can buy a footmuff to keep your little one warm in the winter for £24.99. The footmuff is made from soft, micro- fibre fabric and has a cosy fleece liner for additional comfort. It comes in different colours to match your pushchair, so again, have a good search around. Also, you can buy a sun parasol which clips to the frame, and these cost around £25. Again available in colours to match your pushchair.
This really is a super lightweight pushchair, perfect for trips to town, and out and about. The one handed fold is handy for us busy mums who don't have time to fiddle about with lots of buttons and bit and bobs. It is nice and light, easy to push and steer, and very robust. The front wheels are both lockable, and able to swivel so you can change it according to the preference of the person using the buggy, As I say, you know the name Maclaren means you are getting a well known pushchair which will last you and is reliable, a vital thing when you are buying something for your child!

l had one of the original striped fold-up buggies for my first child in the seventies (second-hand) and it was amazing! So lightweight, and yet strong. Nowadays there are many more safety features which add both weight and bulk to the buggy
