Mad for It: From Blackpool to Barcelona: Football's Greatest Rivalries - Andy Mitten

A celebration of the classic football derby matches. From the Celtic--Rangers rivalry and Tyneside derby to the biggest global clashes from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, journalist... more...Andy Mitten uses the fans' own words and stories to illuminate the conflicts, tensions, histories and culture behind these fascinating games. From Belfast to Barcelona, Buenos Aires to Bogota, these are football matches that are far more than a game. Often a microcosm of life in a city, there are countless rivalries between clubs which are steeped in a historical enmity based on class, religion, politics, envy or philosophy. Some of the games, like Rangers v Celtic, are renowned for their vocal sectarianism, others like Tenerife v Las Palmas for their eclectic fan base, while little or nothing is known about the derbies in Cairo or Johannesburg which attract twice as many fans as any Old Firm clash.Andy Mitten journeys across the UK and the far-flung regions of planet football, talking to a host of passionate fans -- from the vividly ordinary, working-class supporters to the corporate box brigade who think nothing of hopping on a plane for their weekend jaunt to the exotic cities of Madrid, Barcelona or Milan -- and gets to share their highs and lows. This in turn provides a fresh and revealing insight into the people who make these matches matter -- the fans -- using their own words and stories to illuminate the conflicts, tension and histories behind the games. He also interviews players, managers, politicians, local journalists and agents drawing out differing opinions and perspectives on the beautiful game. Among the highlights: Celtic v Rangers, Man Utd v Liverpool, Cliftonville v Linfield, Sunderland v Newcastle, Preston v Blackpool, Barcelona v Real Madrid, Roma v Lazio, Boca Juniors v River Plate, Fenerbache v Galatasaray, the Faroe Islands derby, the Calcutta Derby, and the coldest derby on the planet, alongside many more.

Yes it IS Madding - not Maddening !!

Advantages: A beautiful film
Disadvantages: A little long

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD 1967 I remember going to the cinema in the 70?s to watch this film and loving it, Thomas Hardy had always been one of my favourite writers, and ?Far From the Madding Crowd? a close second favourite behind ?Tess of the D?Urbervilles? The film was released in 1967 by MGM and directed by the same man who directed "Midnight Cowboy, John Schlesinger, another popular film at the time. When I saw the DVD cheap on Amazon I decided to add it to my list to watch it again. "Far from the Madding Crowd" is set around the 1860?s in the English countryside of ?Wessex? in a setting of chalk cliffs leading down to the sea, green countryside and small town manners and prejudices. The film stars Julie Christie as Bathsheba Everdene, the daughter of a poor widow, who cares for her wealthy uncle. When her ...

He's from Barcelona

Advantages: Everything you want on a city break
Disadvantages: Too many things to do

Barcelona ^^^^^^^^^ Barcelona is one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe, and for several very good reasons. It is only a short flight from the UK and with budget airlines can be very cheap to reach. Being a coastal city the climate is not too oppressive for our sensitive natures and there is a little bit of everything available to keep just about any kind of visitor entertained. There are bars, restaurants and night life if that?s what you?re after. There are museums, galleries and spectacular architecture if that?s your bent and there are beaches, parks and shopping to fill in the gaps. Whatever type of break you?re after; chances are you?ll find it in Barcelona. Having recently spent four days in the city what struck me most was just how much there was to do and how much I?d left undone. I?ve been on several ...

A quieter side to Blackpool.

Advantages: Clean, friendly and great value for money.
Disadvantages: None worthy of mention during my two night stay.

I am not long back from a weekend trip to Blackpool but as I have already reviewed the hotel I stayed in, as I had stayed there before, I thought I would rewind to a business trip I had to Blackpool last year and a nice hotel I stayed in then. The hotel in question for my business trip was the Belgrave Madison hotel, this hotel was recommended to me by a friend and I was very happy with his recommendation. My friend had told me of the great service, friendly atmosphere and the disconnection with what Blackpool is all about (ie) noise and hustle and bustle, and he was 100% correct. The hotel is situated in a much quieter part of Blackpool, it sits on the queen?s promenade, north shore, it is actually right on the join of Blackpool and Bispham, it is set on the cliffs and has a beautiful sea view and whether the weather is good ...
