...I actually paid £22.99 for Mafia a few weeks after reading a review of the new Godfather game to be released for the X-Box 360. Being a big fan of the Gangsters PC game I decided it was time to fall back to my Italian roots, take the oath and extort some cash from the poor citizens of Chicago. Lets roll!!
The basic plot to the game is that you are a poor old taxi driver, cornered into helping two mafia guys escape a hit - following ... ...and deeper into their seedy underworld. Sounds great so far!
First impressions are that the game could have been so much more! The missions of which there are 10 seem very similar all the way through. 5 of them involve driving your taxi at high speed to either escape the police, a rival firm or to deliver packages. Ooooo, exciting - not. If I wanted to buy a driving game I would have bought Grand Theft Auto!! The remaining missions ... more
Yet another purchase from Game - this time I actually paid £22.99 for Mafia a few weeks after reading a review of the new Godfather game to be released for the X-Box 360. Being a big fan of the Gangsters PC game I decided it was time to fall back to my Italian roots, take the oath and extort some cash from the poor citizens of Chicago. Lets roll!!
The basic plot to the game is that you are a poor old taxi driver, cornered into helping two mafia guys escape a hit - following the completion of this first mission you are drawn deeper and deeper into their seedy underworld.
The remaining missions involve wandering around the streets extorting money and goods from various people by putting the frighteners on them.
The game falls down in a number of areas. The graphics are very early 1990's with backdrops that seem to run over and over in the same way as a Scooby Doo cartoon! The characters have as much detail as a blank piece of A4 paper and did nothing for me whilst playing.
The sound is poor - the taxi engine sounds like a cat being strangled over and over and not like a car engine at all. The dialogue between missions is basic, hard to hear and understand and very time is spent building up some sort of story to give you the vibe that you are a gangster.
There are 3 difficulty levels all of which are very easy to complete. I had the game 2 days and completed it on the hardest difficulty level and felt completely robbed and while actually playing I was bored out of my mind - pure stubborness was the only reason I continued to play.
The controls are easy to pick up - after all how hard is to learn go - brake - handbrake?!?
Dull - dull - dull and a complete waste of money. This game is poo and not recommended at all. If you are sick enough to want to buy this I wouldn't suggest you do so for anyone under the age of 15 due to the liberal use of foul language and adult themes.
Advantages: Amazing graphics, gameplay, sounds and even the story is great too! Disadvantages: Quite a fast PC required to get the best out of the game
Mafia is one of the greatest games in a long while. I had been anticipating it since my friend brough round a video of it (which was so old it had a video of Halo (PC) on it - I think this was before I new what an Xbox was going to be[confused yet?])anyway, the developers of Mafia postponed it until I forgot all about it, until about a month ago, another friend bough it and a week later I borrowed it.
The game is no dissappointment, as long as you have a hi-spec system there is nothing to be desired. The missions are original and fun, only early on where you must ferry people around Lost Haven as a taxi driver does the game get a little dull, but the realisation of what lies ahead compels you to keep playing.
The game was not particularly difficult. It was no walkthrough however and its 20 levels took 3 or so weeks to complete. It ...

Advantages: Atmospheric FPS with a difference, Story + Characters Disadvantages: Multiplayer :( , Sometimes hard to see, somewhat short
I got this game quite recently from a local games shop (pre-owned) for £10 after playing the demo downloaded via Xbox LIVE.
~Story~
At the beggining it appears that the Darkness is yet another Godfather-esqe Mafia style game, however soon into ther game the character you play, Jackie, begins to hear voices and then get's possessed by a dark entity known as the darkness. The basic storyline of this game is that your 'uncle' Paulie and his corrupt police pal are trying to kill you, and you are trying to hurt their business and get at them because they aren't holding up the 'old ways' of running the mob. You also interact with ordinary people to do side quests etc. and sort of live through the eyes of Jackie. Also if you're a fan of the comics this game actually does cover some of them and is where the ideas behind the game actually ...
Advantages: Great game play. Good storyline and missions Disadvantages: Dreadful graphics. Full of bugs and glitches.
where you pick up illicit booze that aren?t displayed on the city map at all. (Which you can access just like in GTA) But there really isn?t any viable excuse for shoddy workmanship in today?s competitive gaming market, and this game gives the impression it was simply thrown together without the necessary effort and skill required to ensure its quality.
What I didn?t actually realise until I carried out a little research on the Web is that Mafia was actually one of the most successful PC games of 2002, earning itself many accolades and awards, and that the PS2 and X-box versions were only released almost as an afterthought in early 2004. Obviously the intention was to squeeze every last Euro of profit from the game, and to trade on the well deserved good reputation of the PC version.
